This is the comic strip thread, not comic strip cred.

Ppbbbt. All I see here are C&H postings.

C&H may be the greatest strip of all time (IMO, it is) but without anyone representing Peanuts, I declare this thread poseur territory.

(I have a multi-year running debate with a good friend over the supremacy of Peanuts v C&H)

Did one of you go away for a couple years so you weren't able to just agree it's Calvin and Hobbes and move on?

I mean, seriously, everyone is racing for second place here.

You're really underestimating the brilliance and longevity of Peanuts. Without Schulz's existential longing, C&H doesn't exist.

Never mind that Schulz basically created the modern strip format.

Kelly and Schulz drew a direct line to Watterson. I prefer Watterson but I think that has as much to do with the period of my upbringing as it does the superiority of his work.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "supremacy".  If it's quality I don't think there is a contender with Calvin and Hobbes.

But I agree that Peanuts was groundbreaking and paved the way.  But I don't give Peanuts extra quality points just because they were an inspiration.

Both, however, are great.  Far Side too.

This is the cartoon that proves Calvin is adopted*. Because if Dad shared any DNA with the boy, you know what he'd do with that car and all those sitting ducks blocking his way.

* OK, you can come up with alternate explanations like infidelity

Well, it goes in murky territory. Do we appreciate the innovator or the advancer? Is Psycho a better film than Seven because it created the genre or is Seven better because it is, when viewed objectively today, the superior film?

Arguments can be made for both sides.

But, hey, I adore C&H. I've read the entire series 3-4 times. I don't think we should dismiss Peanuts or what Schulz did out of hand, though.

Or, hell, Walt Kelly. The visual style of Watterson is so heavily influenced by Kelly.

I love comics.

I don't want to dismiss Schultz, just firmly praise his silver medal performance.

Fair enough. So where do you rate Far Side and Bloom County in comparison?

Personally, I think comics hit a high point in the 50s and 80s. Since then, it's been an ugly road. So much mediocrity in print, so much pushback from staid publishers without a clue.

But the internet gave us XKCD and Cyanide and Happiness so there's that.
