Interest in Perkins

Well, it doesn't surprise me, but according to Jon Morosi's Twitter feed/MLBTR, there is a lot of interest from other teams around Glen Perkins (I was kind of wondering when we would start getting calls about him). The Twins' asking price, just like for most of the other pieces that they don't have to trade this year (Willingham, Morneau, and Span), is apparently "very high".

We just signed this guy to a 3-year extension. Let's give it until AT LEAST NEXT YEAR before we even think about trading Perkins. He is a very solid (and 97% reliable) presence out in the bullpen, and it is a guy who has been with the Twins his entire career.

Perkins numbers are not that good this season

I'd contest that a 3.09 ERA is pretty decent. He had a couple of fluky bad outings. I don't think there's any indication he's any less dominant than last year. He's probably as good as all but a small handful of closers, and he can be our closer, cheap, both during and after the rebuild. And he's a local boy who presumably signed cheap in hopes he'd get to stay in MN. He should be kept.

You are right that he is appearing better than last year, at least in effectiveness. Several of his less meaningless stats, BB/9, K/9, and K/BB are all up or down; BB/9- 3.1 in 2011, 2.7 so far in 2012; K/9-9.5 in 2011, 10.5 so far in 2012; K/BB-3.10 in 2011, 3.92 so far in 2012

Ya, because if you can get a guy that can play every day, or start, you want to hold onto a guy that pitches 60 innings a year....

BIG IF!!! for 8th inning guy maybe closer....what do you expect to get really??? He's cheap and if he indeed turns into our full time closer next yr it will be at a clearance rack price.

I'd take a B pitching prospect for him. I might take a c+ pitching prospect. You can find relievers when our team sucks.

I don't understand the rationale for taking a c+ prospect. Isn't that something that the Twins have in abundance?

And it seems to me that Perkins is extra valuable because he has a superior fastball and he has a good track record as a reliever.

You are probably correct. You know a lot more than I do. But Perkins seems very valuable to me and a c+ prospect does not seem fair. I would love to be educated as to why you might consider dealing him for a c+.

As we know, Perkins had just signed a long term deal with a nice hometown discount. Perkins stated that playing in his home State was important to him.

Do we really think that Ryan will trade him away before the ink is even dry on his contract, and for a C+ prospect?

We have to remind ourselves, that it's not always about numbers and statistics. There are actual people involve too.

Ryan does not want a reputation of burning players who show some good will towards his Organization.

Trade him if there is a blow away offer. Burning him for a low to average prospect would be foolish.

I think Perkins has a better chance at being a useful starting pitcher than the return they would get.

His recent success can not be exclusively linked to the relief role. You can see the addition of the slider also correlates to his success. Starting pitchers are so valuable and rare, the Twins should consider the possibility of using him on the rotation next year.
