I don't like that we had to sign Schick for well over slot and Jax for exactly slot. Jax especially makes very little sense- he seemed like for sure someone that could save some bonus money. And sure Schick is a junior, but his I don't think he'd improve his position as a senior- not sure what leverage he has.

Cool.  So, even with Schiek signing over slot, the Twins have saved about 225k so far.

I'm surprised that got Baddoo under slot too. I bet Miranda comes in under slot. The PR draftees outside the first round always tend to.

Hmm, 3 years in Arkansas or more than quarter million dollars at 18. Damn, that's a tough one....

I get what you're saying but Fayetteville is actually a really nice town in the mountains with good weather and a pretty good baseball program. He goes to a private catholic school in a very wealthy area of KC so I would assume his parents have a decent amount of money and that wouldn't be the main factor. The decision will probably come down to starting his pro career or furthering his education

Rortvedt will probably take about 7 years to develop.

That seems a bit extreme, that puts his debut at 25 years old. I can't remember an MLB debut at 25 years old where the player wasn't deemed a bust or at the very least a disappointment unless injuries were involved

Yep. People have a blanket perception of Arkansas, and Fayetteville is geographically, educationally and culturally far removed from much of the rest of the state stereotype.

Rortvedt doesn't even turn 18 until a week from now. Don't know anything about his physical maturity, but it wouldn't really be that surprising if, as a full-time catcher, he didn't debut as a permanent roster inhabitant until he was age 24.

Anyone know if he is a multi-sport guy or a baseball specialist? And the history of success for a catcher coming out of Wisconsin prep level play?

He turns 19 next week.

The history of prep kids from WI isn't good.

I'm not sure if this is the proper place to put this but .... looks like the Angels second round pick is not going to sign with them and is instead going to go to college.  http://www.halosheaven.com/2016/6/15/11943856/MLB-draft-2nd-round-pick-brandon-marsh-opts-not-to-sign-with-angels

Marsh was obviously a big time HS player and is committed to Kennisaw State.  Presumably, if he goes to college, his family would get some sort of insurance on him if he's not drafted again.  He's a multi-sport star so maybe he thinks if he concentrates on baseball for a few years, he'll be a top 10 talent?

In any event, the Angels system is among the worst in baseball and not getting to add talent to it now (even though they get a protected pick next year) isn't helping them.

Just added an update that I think many of you will like.

I am such a dork... I did not realize you had it in reverse chronological order (good idea, by the way), and spent 15 minutes scouring the post because I couldn't believe you meant Casey Scroggins!

Willson Contreras was called up today after eight seasons in minor league ball, and he is one of the top catching prospects in the game. Catchers take 3-4 more years to develop, so 7 seems about right.

Benninghoff deal is a steep price for the 11th pick.  Will that affect the Balazovik Signing?  Also they had a couple of other high schoolers further down as well.  This is gonna get interesting.

It better not, if they don't sign him they lose that slot money, no?

Does Benninghoff's deal mean that Kirilloff is coming in fairly significantly under slot?

Yeah, I've spent a fair amount of time in Arkansas - Fayetteville is like Austin, or Norman, or Tuscaloosa, a liberal college town in a dead red state.

Crazy deal for Benninghoff! Pay him like he was healthy and a top pick as previously expected, and then undergo TJ surgery! Sooooo unlike the Twins. I love it!

The "draft team" spent a significant amount of time in the War Room on Friday night after the draft was complete. (I was hoping to catch up with a couple of them after we did our radio gig... but they were working late.) I think it's fair to say that after the finished their picks on Friday they realized they were going to have a significant amount of money to spend, so they shopped it. They made the Benninghoff pick knowing full well what his condition was and how much it would take to sign him. Basically, the Twins did exactly what people on these boards have been clamoring for all along.
