Grandpa was 1928 and Grandma was 1932. Their fathers would have been old enough to be WWI, but I am not sure if they served. They were full blooded German, I am not sure they were very desirable for service.

From what I read, and was told Germans in WW1 were often shunned and they themselves were torn between loyalties. They faced the same disdain and distrust that the Japanese did in WW2 and currently afflicts another group in this era.

My mother's parents grew on farms in the heartland of Wisconsin. They came from huge families. I think my grandpa had 11 or 12 siblings and my grandma had 5. They all moved to the Twin Cities or Milwaukee except for 3 of them. It's a hard life.

And unless there was enough land to go around, not easy to get started in. To get into farming today at a size that would allow you a chance to survive, I bet 2M easy.

They tried it in the late 40's early 50's, they did not like it. Heck, they liked to party at that time and raise some hell. My Grandpa was an heavy machinery instructor for 4 years in the Army and they gave up the farm and moved to the Twin Cities. He then became a crane operator.

My mother's maiden name was Rassbach.  The kids in town called her oldest brother 'Fritz'.  He kept the name and beat up anyone who called him that.

Heh... Late night, waking up late, joining the game thread during thr warmup for a chuckle or two. Loving the beer stories. Didn't even sigh that much at the 4-5 holes in the lineup. Again. Enjoying the banter, right up until you can tell the game has started, then...

The comments suddenly turn to, 'oh, crap,' and 'breathe...' and I already know I probably don't want the mlbtv today...
