Royals Yordano Ventura

According to mlbtraderumors, the 25  year old might be on the trading block.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/06/royals-have-recently-offered-yordano-ventura-in-trades.html

He has a nice contract but he's underperforming this year and his anger issues - he started another brawl last night with Machado (this has been a great year for baseball brawls) so KC might look to move him.  No idea what they'd want back.  From the article:

"The extension once seemed an asset, but now may no longer have surplus value. Though we’re now one and a half years into the contract, the vast majority of the guarantee remains to be paid. Ventura has received just over $1MM of what he’s owed so far, with an escalating structure that mimics the arbitration process still to come. And there’s no doubt that other organizations will have concerns about Ventura’s questionable reputation and on-field antics.

It’s not exactly clear what Kansas City would be looking to accomplish via trade. Contenders would certainly hesitate to add Ventura to a rotation, and it’s a big commitment even if a club hoped to utilize his live arm in the pen. A swap that would allow the Royals to fill a need at the major league level without adding payroll could make some sense, though that’s just generalized speculation on my part."

The guy just doesn't seem to get it.  He is going to get his teammates hurt if he keeps throwing at guys. I kind of thought he was done with this stuff after teams started throwing at KC players all the time. Also it paints your team as having a black hat or at least in a negative light. Hard for me as a fan to get behind someone who intentionally throws at guys on a frequent basis.  Personally I wouldn't want him on my team.  Someone will likely be desperate enough to trade for him though.

I like his fire, but he too often crosses the line to recklessness.  I wouldn't mind him on this team because of that fire, but I'd worried about getting burned with his antics.

Can't imagine many feel bad for Machado either... He literally walked halfway to first base glaring at Ventura in the previous at bat when he homered off of him. So, I don't feel bad for Machado, who has a history of his own issues...

But Ventura is an idiot. 99 mph fastballs are nice, but he's a bit beyond intense and into the realm of crazy.

Someone will take a chance on him because of his raw pitching ability. I just don't want the Twins to be that team. I'm not a fan of headcase athletes, and Ventura is certainly a headcase out there.

I think it depends on the price.  Sure, he's a hot head but I'm not at all worried about a player getting hurt as payback for Ventura.  That simply doesn't happen.

I'm more worried about his stats falling off and I'm not sure he can start 30 games a year for several years.  But his stuff looks nice and is worth taking a gamble on.  But I don't know what would be a good fit for KC.  With Moose hurt, Plouffe would fit but Plouffe is really struggling and would be about a 6m payroll increase for them, so I don't think that works.  I wouldn't trade Kepler for him.  Not sure what it would take.

Beggers can't be choosers. This team is too far off to be excluding guys because of a temper.

Here is a list of guys in our rotation that have better stuff than him:

Here is a list of guys in our rotation that make more money than him:

Ricky Nolasco, Milone, and Ervin Santana.

He still throws a 95.5 mph fastball, per pitch FX. Is owed 3/18 with two options at 12m each. This is exactly what we should be doing. Although I doubt the Royals trade him and likely not to us.

machado didn't homer off him yesterday. Machado had a double In his first plate appearance. In the plate appearance you are talking about, which was his second one, Ventura almost hit him twice. That's why Machado was yapping at him. And because of that,Ventura beaned him with his fastest fastball of the game his next plate appearance.

There's a Fangraphs article about Ventura that's a good read. This excerpt seals up my view on not wanting Ventura on this team:

"Recently, inside the Kansas City Royals’ clubhouse, Yordano Ventura was talking about how he planned on hitting Jose Bautista with a pitch the next time he faced him. The people around Ventura rolled their eyes, tired of the bluster, done with the immaturity, hopeful he was playing fugazi instead of the on-field arsonist they’d seen too many times for their liking. Among his teammates and in the Royals’ front office alike, they’ve long waited for Ventura to grow up, only to end up amazed at how he manages to plumb beneath even his own low standards."

On a team with a very clear lack of leadership, Ventura would be a disaster. I don't care if he throws 110 MPH, who on this team would hold him accountable for his antics?

I would rather trade for Ventura and sign Deebo from Friday to keep him in line. We can DFA any number of about fifteen players to make room.

Ventura and Deebo amount to more wins than Dean/Nolasco and insert any of the remaining 13 guys.

Hire a mentor. Threaten to put him in AAA or the pen every time he throws at guys. Hell, at 3-18 make him our closer. He won't be throwing at guys in the 9th inning up 3-2. For once, can we take an upside risk and think outside the box? He has electric stuff and is owed peanuts, with five total years of control through his prime. And again, we are terrible and lack pitching talent.

Yanking him from the game would also be an option.  Perhaps hurting the team in that context would make him think about it more.

He doesn't sound Minnesota nice at all.

which is why I like him.  however, he sounds like a hammer-head type.

Edit:  After reading the FanGraphs article, I'd have to have 2 things first

  1. a sit-down with Ventura and tell him where the "bear ****s in the woods"  and
  2. make it infinitely clear that this may be his last shot

Ventura is an idiot, like most people who think this is the way to solve problems.  Machado has his own history of that stupidity too.

Both of them should grow up.

And so should the rest of us - watch your HR soar, pump your fist after strikeouts, feel free to enjoy your own work.  I don't hesitate to be excited about things I accomplish, why should people running around playing a kid's game?  Have fun and lighten up guys.

Yeah, my bad... the way Machado was pimping it, I assume it was a home run and not a fly out.

I'm with you on thinking outside the box and taking a chance on a young pitcher with good stuff. I just don't want Ventura's attitude anywhere near this team. Everything should be sunshine and roses for Kansas City coming off a WS title and back-to-back WS berths. If they have a problem with him, there must be something very off-putting about him.

I mean, Salvador Perez conveniently jogged slow enough allowing Machado to get his punches in for christ sake.

It seems like the biggest issue is he throws at guys. I don't think he would do that closing games. If he throws 95.5 as a starter, he probably is throwing 97-98 as a closer and his 3-18 is a fair closer contract and a need for us.

We need a huge injection of talented arms. Chargois looks like he will provide that and likely Berrios too. But we need about four more. If this guy was Beaver Cleaver he would not be the on trading block, that is the bigggest issue for me.

Watch the video:

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/182702276/royals-yordano-ventura-hits-os-manny-machado

Machado may have been glaring at Ventura, but after the pitcher drilled him in the ribs with a 99mph fastball, I was rooting for Machado to knock him out with one punch. Unfortunately, Machado's wild swing missed.

No way the Twins should get this guy. He's like an unruly child with a gun. Bench-clearing brawls are not why I watch baseball.
