Ideas for Replacing the Men in Charge

Maybe I missed it.  Has he been involved in the front office anywhere?

He owns 3 minor league teams (Os, Giants & Rays affiliates), wanted to purchase and run the Orioles but Angelos will not sell.

All but five MLB managers were one time MLB players. Seems like you would be substantially shrinking the pool of availability if former players were excluded.

I pretty clearly wrote former MLB players with no managerial experience.

Doug Mientkiewicz has managerial experience in the minors, as much as I hate the Twins Country Club, I would consider him.

What in the world are Raul Ibanez's qualifications? He played for a long time?

I would start with the top ten teams on this list.  Reading through their write-ups, most of these teams have 2-3 interesting names on them.  That is 20-30 people I would put head and shoulders above any internal GM candidate we have.

Reach out to the Cardinals, Rays, Cubs, etc. and get some recommendations.  While this is a competitive sport, it is also a small world.  The GM's all know each other.  And even if it involves losing talent, most respected people will support and advocate for people under them leaving for more high profile jobs.

I also think that the GM needs to also be the president and needs to have cart blanche as far as the manager goes.  The two of them need to be rowing in the same direction.  That is a big miss for us right now.

I agree with all of this. In another thread, I had mentioned that Jed Hoyer might be a name to consider if the Cubs win it all this year. He might want a chance to get out from Epstein's shadow.

Another organization I would consider is the Giants. They don't have the same public analytic cred, but a lot of sources have indicated that their analytics team is much better than publicly known. In addition, they are probably up there with the Cardinals in pure player development.

Since 2002 the Giants have drafted Cain (25th), Lincecum (10th), Bumgarner (10th), Posey (5th), and Wheeler (6th) in the first round. And Brandon Crawford in the 4th round in 2008 and Brandon Belt in the 5th round in 2009.

That is about as solid of a draft track record as you will find outside of a team with top 3 picks every year.
