Article: Kyle Gibson and Ervin Santana Are Placed On The Disabled List

Recommended Posts

For the Minnesota Twins, the hits just keep coming.Unfortunately it's hits to their collective health, not against opposing pitchers.

This afternoon, the corresponding move to the Jose Berrios promotion was revealed: starting pitchers Kyle Gibson and Ervin Santana will be placed on the 15-day DL today. As a result, Berrios and Tyler Duffey will likely be in the Twins rotation for at least a couple of starts. The news about Gibson was the biggest surprise. He hurt his shoulder in his start on Sunday. Per Mike Berardino, an MRI on Gibson’s shoulder revealed no structural damage and so the Twins are hopeful that his stay on the disabled list will be short.

Ervin Santana missed his last start on Sunday with a back problem so adding him to the DL was more expected. The Twins can make it retroactive to his last start, which was April 19th, so he could pitch again by the middle of next week if he is recovered.

The starting pitching depth which was the focus of so many stories in spring training will be used to patch over the spots. Tyler Duffey was recalled for Sunday’s start. He was exceptional for the Twins late last year (3.10 ERA), but lost his spot in the rotation due to inconsistency in spring training. The 25-year-old threw four innings on Sunday, leaving the game after being hit on the shoulder by a batted ball. He gave up just one run, but walked two and gave up five hits. His next start will be on Saturday.

And we learned earlier today that JO Berrios will be starting tomorrow's game. You can read analysis about him here. The promotion of Duffey and Berrios, along with the recall of Alex Meyer means the Twins have promoted their three top major league-ready arms over the last three days. In addition, they are promoting Jorge Polanco to bring the number of pitchers on the roster back down to thirteen.

Well, Ok, maybe there was a reason why Gibby completely sucked so far this season. And Ervin, I think, wrenched his back spinning around to watch Sano gack thay fly ball last week- that made my back hurt, too, as I sat in my chair and watched.

I'm glad to see Berrios and Meyer get the call, especially in a situation where Molly has no choice but to use them. Go get 'em, young' uns.

Also did Milone just suck out a flush on the river or what. That guy has nine lives.

My thoughts exactly. I was thinking last night's start virtually guaranteed he'd be on his way to the pen ... then he pulled that magic horseshoe from wherever he had it hidden.

Maybe we'll luck out and they'll decide it's time to see what Meyer can do in the rotation.

No kidding? You mean to tell me that a guy who has been pretty stable during his career has a sharp downturn in effectiveness winds up injured?! Amazing

Absolutely!  Gibson is no more injured than I am!  He is simply struggling and Ryan is gaming the system of "player movement" to try to save this miserable start.  It is Occam's razor--if these new players outperform the "injured" veterans it reflects badly on the decision to begin with the original rotation.

I just see no reason to mess with what Meyer was doing as a starter. You either bring him up to start or leave him in AAA to start and see if he can keep it up. The only way they should be moving him to the bullpen is if he starts to struggle as a starter again....BUT, you don't mess with a good thing when starters are hard to find.

I agree with you. He should be starting games in AAA. He should not be in our bullpen doing nothing but warming up and he should only be in our rotation by the same logic that was refuted when we sent down Buxton and Kepler.

Ah, the classic crappy pitching performance followed by a shoulder strain injury and move to the 15-day DL. It almost expected now. Seriously can the FO really think people buy this routine any more.

1. I buy it. Assuming you know better than the pitcher and the organization what's going on with Gibson's shoulder is arrogant as hell.

2. Why on earth wouldn't crappy performances and shoulder strains be correlated? That makes perfect sense.

3. Do we really need to find things to complain about when our top pitching prospect has been promoted? Can we not just enjoy the show?

If Duffey and Berrios are successful, it will be very interesting how Ryan handles this. Santana and Gibson are not going anywhere, so either one or both go back down. And if they don't, then you have to deal with Milone and or who? It's almost too early to find a trade for Nolasco, or anyone for that matter. Milone in the pen makes me go UGH! As for Meyer? They bring him up because the pen is gassed. Then don't pitch him because the game was close, and it's "not fair"? So we are waiting for a blowout to use him? He finally had a nice clean start to the year in Rochester, as a starter. Just what everyone wanted. And now he gets jerked around to an unused reliever? Things are never smooth in Twins Territory!

Considering the amounts of alcohol ingested by TD posters, it's safe to says this is a "bottle half empty" crowd! :)

It is unfortunate that these guys are hurt. They are out there trying to win for their teammates, and to provide us with entertainment. Getting hurt stinks. I will never question a professional athlete's pain tolerance compared to normal people, I've seen it in action.

I too would prefer Meyer start for Milone. But, Molitor appears to be frozen in fear of using young pitchers (unlike young, bad, hitters). So, I'm not holding my breath.

Getting off topic here, but since it was raised ... perhaps the 'half empty crowd' and the 'half full crowd' could meet in the middle and just call it a half a bottle instead of qualifying it as either half full or half empty.

If this is a classic move that the front office unethically pulls, we probably would have heard at least one starter call them out on it, not to mention the MLBPA.

I don't think a healthy pitcher WANTS to sit.

I am really loving all the "valuable" game time action Meyer is getting. Sure beats the heck out of the actual pitching he could be doing in Rochester.

Great comment..I definitely agree.  If the FO knew that Berrios was going to start tonight, why didn't they just call him up on Monday instead of Meyer?  Meyer could have stayed in Rochester and AT LEAST stayed on his pitching schedule.  It has now been a week since he last threw.  What a way to mess with a guys head!  I hope that when (and if) Meyer does get to throw, that he is successful since it's been so long.

Amen to that!

No, I phrase it like they are people, who sometimes just want to spend time with their families instead of beating the crap out of their bodies for entertainment purposes.
