Article: Twins Promote Jose Berrios

Recommended Posts

Kyle Gibson placed on 1 day DL:

and E. Santana has back spasms.

So maybe both Berrios and Meyer get starts this week?

Yup, both Gibson and Santana put on DL:

As Danchat posted above, I would think it'll be Berrios and Duffey getting starts, with Meyer in the pen.

Unless Duffey is hurt, then prolly Meyer.

I like the idea of Berrios coming up, but I don't like the idea of Meyer languishing in the bullpen.

Put Berrios and Meyer in the rotation and go for it.

Couldn't agree with you more. Quit jacking Meyer around. Get your 2 top pitching prospects in the rotation and worry about the other guys later

Hey, I think he's going to be under enough pressure. He doesn't project like an elite ace, but could develop into one eventually. His rise reminds me of Garza. He struggled mightily for a couple years before we traded him. I'm hoping he can flash some of the upside and be a .500 pitcher this year with enough ability to win us a few games on his own.

The difference between Berrios and Garza is Berrios has great secondary stuff and is willing to change his approach if one pitch isn't working. Honestly Berrios 2 curveballs are as good as his fastball and Berrios has no problem mixing in his change up as well. Garza came into the bigs expecting to over power hitters with his fastball and not adapt to MLB hitters.

As soon as I saw the news, I thought, "I'm holding Madre Dos accountable for how he fares!"

I sure hope we're celebrating together throughout a successful debut and a great rookie year, mi amiga

As long as nobody feeds him shrimp and there is plenty of Fruit Loops and Cookies and Cream ice cream, he will be fine.

Tonkin would definitely have to go through waivers, but I don't think the Twins would be particularly bothered by that, at this point (nor should they be, if they feel like they can add a better pitcher).

Could be Duffey, if Berrios is essentially taking the place of the DL'ed Ervin Santana.  Although Milone staying in the rotation isn't ideal...

I am not exactly sure why so many people just want to dump Tonkin. Especially on this BP staff.

Sending him down Plural would be cruel and unusual.  :)

I think he was referring to Micheal! :)

Great day for all Twins fans! However, it sucks that Berrios will make his major league debut in 50 degree weather, with 50-60% chance of rain.

When he pitched in Elizabethton in 2012, he pitched at night, in the mountains and next to the Doe River.    Many nights in August, by the 6th inning, I have my sweater on.    BTW, it rains here too.   He will be fine.  I just hope Jannieliz and Valentina are there for his 1st game.  :)

One of the things I like most about Berrios is his pitching instincts. Yes he has good stuff. Yes he has a great work ethic. Yes he has a determined, bulldog mentality. But if you recall his first few starts at Rochester last season, he didn't have great results. In an interview, after about his second or third start, he made comments regarding needing to change some things in his approach. He then went out and killed it the rest of the year.

Wondering, while this is the majors, not the minors, and it's about results and much less about player development, until or unless a trade is made at some point, would the Twins consider a 6 man rotation at some point?

I may be mistaken, but the way it's done in milb, particularly with the Kernals, don't they rotate the starters every few potential starts to a few days in the pen before starting again? This would mean you could keep a 12 man staff, while allowing Meyer, Duffey and Berrios to stay up, keep starting most of the time, while still working in the veteran starters. Now, everyone healthy there are still too many starters, but it's a thought.

I agree and remember Berrios talking about changing his pitching approach. Berrios at this point is so much more of a complete pitcher than any prospects I can remember. Plus at Rochester last year if his fastball didn't work he'd use his curve or change up. Now Matt Garza (the other super highly touted Twins pitcher) was dead set on over powering MLB hitters with his fastball only when he came up. He was no where as mature and was not good at making adjustments like Berrios is. Do I initially expect Berrios to struggle? Well yeah, but with Berrios supereme confidence in him self, his work ethic, and general high pitching IQ, I think he will be pretty good.

Any proud/funny stories to tell about Mr. Berrios who appears to be poised and confident in his game?

Very polite, funny and hard working.  shrimp make him go "POOF" but he could do a number on cookies and cream ice cream.  After watching him eat 3 bowls of Fruit Loops for breakfast, I took away the cereal bowl and handed him a 2 quart serving bowl.  His eyes lit up and he said "for me?"

My weather app says 70% chance of rain today and 90% tonight. Both teams have an off day tomorrow so I'd guess they'll play tomorrow afternoon if they can't go tonight. Shame for me (and I'm sure for a lot of us here) because I wouldn't be able to watch.
