Expanded Rosters

Who do you want to see?
September is one of my favorite times of year. I am a big fan of seeing the young talent that is brought up to fill the roster. With so many knowledgable writers/posters on this site I would love to hear your thoughts on who gets a real look this fall. Also, is there any chance with some of the wasted spaces on the 40 man that some unexpected faces are brought up?

Obviously a lot can change on our roster before August 1. I would really like to see Hendriks get a prolonged low pressure chance to see if his success can translate. Benson seems like he is getting his head screwed back on straight. Does Arcia get a look?

if the outside shot occurs and Hicks gets the chance, who gets dropped from the 40 man to create space? I thought the 40 was full. Or am I missing something?

Trades will create space in the roster. And at this point nobody would cry in the Twins DFA Pavano/Walters/Gray and a slew of more people in the 40 man...

Is Florimon the most ready middle infielder? Any chance we see him? Makes sense to start looking to remedy our 2B problem (dozier should still play everyday, slide to second).

Hendricks, Parmelee, Benson and Slama (If he is healthy, which probably will not be the case). Other than that who cares. Gibson should be left alone and used in the minors to build him up for a debut or role next season in the bigs. Hicks should go to the AFL again as well as Arcia and should be kept away from MLB competition until next season.

I see a good chance that hicks arcia and herrmann all come up from double unless they get moved to AAA in the next week or too. If an outfielder is traded we will see one or both of them come up and even though we technically have 3 catchers there is a chance that herrmann can earn a spot for next season

My guess is Nishioka would get the nod - he had a slow start, but has been steadily improving this year. His numbers are now getting pretty close to Florimon, and Nishioka is already on the 40-man.

While I would love to see Hicks, Herrmann, and Arcia this year, I would rather they were promoted to Rochester within 10 days or so and then all head (or head back to) the AFL.

Nishioka, Tosoni, Benson, and MAYBE Florimon

Guerra (if healthy), Oliveros, Slama (if healthy), and Waldrop

unfortunately the 40 man roster is full right now & MN has never been very big @ releasing players to get a look at others in Sept.

Aaron Hicks, Chris Herrmann, Kyle Gibson, Bruce Pugh & Dakota Watts whould be the 5 added to the 40 man this winter on their first shots.

Pedro Florimon & David Bromberg I expect to get added also as they are 6 hr FAs.

At this point, we may not see any of em if spots on the 40 man dont open. I would say Florimon, Hicks, Herrmann & Pugh are the frontrunners.

I expect Tosoni, Nishi, Manship, Gray (PLEASE), Capps & Pavano to be 6 to be taken off.

With the roster full, I would guess Arcia, Benson, possibly but not guarranteed Nishi/Valencia, Oliveros & Hendriks

Additions to 40-man: Gibson, Hicks, Herrmann (for sure), probably Salcedo and possibly Danny Santana and BJ Hermsen. I kinda doubt that Pugh or Watts will be added. (Pugh was Rule V eligible last year).

I think you're probably right on Florimon, but the Twins could probably bring Bromberg back without adding him to the roster.

In regards to September my guess would be: Benson, Tosoni and, depending on how depleted the OF is, possibly Arcia. Hicks would probably be better suited going back to the AFL (if that's allowed...?). It would make sense to get both Valencia and Nishi back up as well. (Though if Plouffe's thumb keeps him out, we'll see Valencia sooner than that...)

Hendriks, Oliveros and Waldrop will all come up. If Manship doesn't (and possibly even if he does), his Twins career is over. The Twins would also benefit from getting a look at Deolis Guerra, as he's out of options.

So, I guess... there's a chance that the full 40 is up minus the injuries... Of course, it's hard to speculate on any of this when the 25- and 40-man may look significantly different come August 1st.

Think Salcedo's wasted yr saves him. Santana, Id be a lil surprised at his level but we dont have many INFs. Hermsen isnt needed for another yr, so he's good. I also agree on Bromberg but think Pugh will be added....Watts can be risked.

Waldrop & Tosoni have had shots before & while they are definately possiblities, I see MN passing on em. They are not high on Waldrop....but have Gray/Fien on the team, go figure....& Tosoni has been severely passed.

Arcia is a sure bet IMO as they're using an option yr regardless & get a free look. I expect he & Benson will get a lot of Sept time.

It's hard to say on Salcedo. I think he's highly regarded enough that he'd be hard to expose.

Santana - like DeLosSantos before him - fits the mold of "speedy MINF" the Twins always add. He's probably 50/50 right now, but if he cools off, they could probably risk it with him.

Hermsen was the same draft as Hicks, high schooler, 2008 While I don't think he would stick on a big-league roster, he's done enough for himself this year to be added.

I thought Pugh would be added last year before he bombed in AA. If he keeps it up, he will be in the conversation for sure.

You have to keep a certain number of AAAA talent on the 40-man roster before season's end to remove come the winter meetings if you add opther players. You can't remove any added 40-man roster guys until spring training, I believe, if theya re added during the offseason (i.e. last year Floriman and Vasquez were examples).

Thus, assuming the Twins do trade 1-2-3 players, the bigger question is who is added from the OTHER names that would really benefit from sitting up here in Spetember.

The only name I can think of is Aaron Hicks, and that is if Span gets traded.

Otherwise, do see Hendriks, Manship, Oliveros, Waldrop and Huerra all coming to the Twins, giving the bullpen a big rest.

Toshi and Valencia will be up as the spare infielders, if not jettisoned during August for a lesser prospect. I'[m sure of Tosoni and/or Benson will come up. Depends on how stingy the Twins may be on room and board on the road.

I actually picture Arcia being called up, just for the experience.

But anyone disappearing before season's end? Gray, who everyone hates, it seems. Will Deduno hang in there until September. Off season decisions will be made on DeVries, Swarzak and Manship, for sure.

Should the Twins add Rivera or Towles as a 4th catcher, or jump those guys with Hermann, who will be added in the off-season anyways.

Sadly, Slama's days with the Twins may be numbered. He found the worst time to suffer an injury again. And Bromberg will be a tough call come te off-season.

Yes, in he real world I would take Slama over Manship, even Oliveros.

Who does go this month: Liriano, Span, Valencia. Who goes in August: Pavano, Capps, Carroll. Do the Twins rid themselves of Morneau and/or Willingham.

Suddenly some of those names above you don't want gone when you see who is coming up from the minors...this year.

completely forgot Hersen signed in 08....didnt play that summer. Wasted yr in service time. Another reason the new system is so good.

Definately he gets added then.

Also dont expect Fiens Walters (Options) & Deduno(options) to make it. Will be a lil unusual if MN keeps 4 Cs on 40 man (has happenned), so could Butera be moved??

Florimon is a 6yr FA if not added also....almost auto for me & reason I dont think Santana will be.

If thier minor league season is over why not? Its not like they would be losing playing time.

It costs service time for the Twins, costs extra money to keep bodies on the 25 man roster, causes potential 40 man issues, and prevents the players from development time in instructs, or just getting some rest or preparation for winter leagues.

I looked at all of the Twins' callups over the last decade. Here is a snapshot:

-Called up ~36 players since 2002

-23 out of 36 started the season at AAA

-only 5 players spent minimal time at AAA (3 in the last 2 years)

-only 3 players skipped AAA completely (all in the last 2 years)

-14 had seen previous time in MLB

-only Alexi Casilla started the season below AA

-Mean age was 25.6

-Median age was 24

-Youngest was 21 (Casilla, Liriano)

-Oldest was 30 (Chris Heintz)

Other than Casilla and Liriano, did any stick to be productive major leaguers?

To me, there are a whole host of guys to be removed from the 40 man who serve no purpose whatsoever, so that many of these other guys can be placed on it. Here goes:

Just gone list:

Sam Deduno/Cole DeVries (or both)

Jeff Gray

Jeff Manship

Drew Butera

Traded list:

Jared Burton

Alexi Casilla

Danny Valencia

So that clears up 7 or 8 spaces (preferably 8). And I would like to see 7 people added (allowing for one position open in the offseason): Hicks, Herrmann, Guerra, Gibson, Pugh, Florimon, and either Watts or Bromberg. Bromberg maybe could just be signed again to a contract instead? Of course the addition of Pugh and Watts could mean bye-bye time for Burnett as well, which would open up a space.

September callups don't count towards service time.
