Is Twins Daily screwing up my internet?

Recommended Posts

Keeping in mind Senator Stevens of Alaska, now dead, still knows more about how the internet works than me, I seem to have a consistent problem when accessing TD.

No matter what browser I use, my internet seems to stall out for 5-10 minutes and then it's working just fine, sometimes I wait it out, sometimes I restart my computer.  Speedtest.com says my internet is working pretty fast - 60mb and my computer isn't that old so it shouldn't be that.  I get this problem only when I try and log onto a few specific websites which have forums (TD and daily kos, for example), not sure if that has anything to do with it but websites like facebook or cnn.com don't seem to screw up my connection.  And it doesn't seem to affect netflix if the kids are watching that at the same time, for example.  It's kind of annoying but not sure what the problem is.

Two thoughts on this. One, I seem to have slowdowns if I have more than one Twins Daily tab open at a time. It's sometimes convenient to do it, but it comes at a cost.

Two, I find that Adobe Flash sometimes hangs around and consumes cycles even after whatever it was showing me is completed. I get into the Windows Task Manager, locate the process and end it, and performance instantly comes back to normal.

I rarely have two tabs open for TD. Whatever is going on pretty much makes the Firefox/TD combo unusable for me. I do okay in Chrome ... but even then can sometimes be a problem.

As someone who works in the industry I can say with about 95% confidence that the majority of the issues that cause these slow down and crashes (happens to me as well) are due to the ads that TD is serving, or to be more clear, the ads that their ad network/etc are serving are causing this. (Which also leads to the corrupt Flash errors as well)

No ad network is fool proof, but some are a LOT better than others and at the end of the day the revenue will be pretty much the same, more than happy to shooting you guys over a list of a half a dozen or so providers who at the very least will stop a number of these issues. (least of which being the auto play, auto sound, auto expand video ads)
