Haha I get that a lot.. Co-workers are stunned that I know a lot of artists before my time. Albums today aren't like what they used to be. They're mostly 1-2 singles that get worn out on the radio and the rest is forgettable...

Also, I could not pick a jazz album by name.....so no jazz made it. 

 

My two 'go to' jazz albums are Miles Davis: Kind of Blue and John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman Studio Album. Both I'd put in the 'soft and dreamy' category, and both are ... easily accessible. In fact, I might have to edit my four above. Sigh.

Wait a minute, aren't you too old for Arctic Monkeys to be on yours?

 

I used to listen to a bunch of AM, but I'm bored with that now. I actually don't really care for my generation of music ... I know I'm just being a stick in the mud, but everything's gotten too poppy. I know a lot of people accuse Nirvana of being the same, but I LOVE Nirvana. They're the bestest. I almost think I like Nirvana better than most people who lived through that era - I don't have any negative memories about it such as safety pins in the ears and whatnot. Yep, I've had people complain to me about that.

 

I haven't listened to enough full albums to actually do a non-classical list - when I first got into rock eight months ago (before that I didn't know of anyone besides The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and the only reason I knew about The Rolling Stones was because I randomly ran into a history of their logo a year or two beforehand), I listened to some full albums by Arctic Monkeys, Muse, The Fratellis, etc., but that's not really my style anymore. Other than Nevermind (which I've listened to 10,000 times in the last month), I mostly just listen to artists' top songs on Spotify, so yeah, Queen's Platinum Collection sounds great ... 3 or 4 CD's? That sounds almost like cheating, but I'll take it!

The 6 Unaccompanied Cello Suites (Yo Yo Ma)

 

The 4th ... either 11 Classic Albums Collection (Doris Day) or The Queen Platinum Collection

Okay ... removing the Brahms and adding John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman studio album. Then my fourth is Queen - Platinum Collection.

 

It'd be easier if I could make a 'mixed CD' for that last one. So my four now are:

Queen - Platinum Collection

Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites with Yo Yo Ma.

 

And I'd listen to Bach in the mornings, Coltrane/Hartman at night and the other two mixed all throughout the day.

Let's just say the two times I've seen Arctic Monkeys, I was on the older side of the crowd. Unlike many of my friends, I love new music. I also love new beer. I think I just love experiencing new things. There are SO MANY!

 

Eating my own dogfood, I have my office door closed, and London Calling on my phone right now. I don't think the other people around me can hear it. Thank goodness I have an office now....

Okay ... I actually don't have a decisive answer to the question I'm about to present (it's Hrb's idea, but I'm curious to know what other people have to say), but if you could be considered the best performer of any three pieces of music on your own instrument, what would they be?

 

I'm tempted to go with overplayed pieces, but I have a feeling people would be emotionally attached to other recordings of those, so I don't know ... it'd be nice to bring up some underrated solos. The bummer thing is, for as much hype as the flute gets, it has a pretty minimal repertoire. Three is a hard number to go with unless you're doing concertos, too - I can't imagine people going, "Oh yeah, Always is the best at the Sonata no. 5 in E minor." I'd prefer "Always is the best at the Bach flute sonatas."

 

But my current (and very flexible) list is:

 

Concerto in D minor - Bernhard Molique

Concierto pastoral - Joaquín Rodrigo

Carnevale di Venezia - Giulio Briccialdi

 

I wanted to go with conducted pieces, but according to Hrb, that's not an option. Sigh ...

If you listen to and like a lot of jazz, those probably wouldn't be the best albums for you. But those two are ones I tell people who don't really know jazz and haven't listened to a lot to start there. Both are truly timeless, imo.

We have some crossover there Mike. Weezer Blue album is the correct answer. Though the green album comes in a close second.

 

The Weezer Blue album has a special place for me, it was my 2nd CD purchase back 20+ years ago (first was Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt). In the past year or so it has had a renaissance on the local radio waves which has made me happy.

Never got into the Green one personally.

Being a vocalist of a wide range (and varying weird abilities to do with my vocal chords - not like that, you sickos!), I'm a big fan of vocal arranged music. My big kick has been Home Free.

 

I'm also a fan of so many varying genres that identifying the rest of the list would be rough.

 

Metallica - Black Album was my pre-game music for athletics

Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue is one of those I can let run on the player over and over and never stop

Jussi Bjorling recordings are amazing (my vocal performance instructor at the U compared me to him vocally in my high range and really got me into his vocal stylings)

Garth Brooks - No Fences was played very frequently in tractor cabs as I worked on the farm, and it definitely changed some of my opinion on country

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

 

I'll also agree on Nirvana - Nevermind.

Give Home Free a try. They are country, I'll warn you of that. The better way to consume them, however, is to watch their videos, because frankly, those guys have FUN making music, which is how it should be!

Btw, I did the Current's 10 essential albums list thingy.....it is really hard to say only 10 albums. I did not pick the most important, or the best, but ones I come back to over and over. I would have put Beethoven's 9th on there, but that seemed silly given it was the Current. Also, I could not pick a jazz album by name.....so no jazz made it. This list is just the music I put on the most often, by far. I feel like the Beastie boys should replace the Clash, given that i listen to them more, or maybe Peter Gabriel's So, or American Idiot......

 

Stupid work is blocking the ability for me to do this easily....guess I'll type it (these are not in order):

 

XTC - Oranges and Lemons (could be skylarking, but whatever)

Dee Lite - World Clique (one hit wonder, but 4 great songs on here)

Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues (this is the one that got me to them)

Arctic Monkeys - AM (the only current album on the list, but the Black Keys or Jack White would be on a longer list)
