Making A Murderer (Netflix)

Is that the new defense attorney? Thankfully this stuff is all getting fuzzy already. I do seem to remember thinking the new defense attorney did give off a bit of a fortune seeker vibe.

I think that's her name.  She of the "cellphone tower ping" smoking gun fame.

*#%^ show.  That's what this second season is going to be.  And some people will eat it up.

I'm not sure if I even want to tune in for the 2nd season. Not sure I want to commit to another season of infuriating content that won't be solved. If they couldn't get any traction from the 1st season with everyone including their grandmothers talking about it, what makes them think a 2nd season will do better?

Thank god they were able to overturn Brendan Dassey's conviction.  Those confession tapes were just dehumanizing to watch.  I really hope the prosecutor's won't appeal.  Now that it's in the Federal Courts, their capacity for malfeasance won't fly.

The beginning of some vindication for these two. The Avery haters will be eating crow soonish too.

Are there any "haters", though? Certainly not on this board. I only remember Levi and I leaning toward his guilt and to my recollection, both of us thought a retrial was warranted (and far away from Manitowoc county).

Sorry Brock.  I've been converted.  I now want Avery to be named our new overlord.  I yearn to be under the yoke of his oppressive rule.  I have given myself over in heart and soul.

Praise Avery.

(Now I'm in the right.  Right?)

No in the various corners of the interwebs . . . dude there are still people who believe that the West Memphis Three are guilty . . .

I didn't watch the show and I only half-heartedly followed the discussion here, but found this an interesting read:

http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/01/25/dead-certainty?mbid=social_facebook_aud_dev_kwjulsub-dead-certainty&kwp_0=196496&kwp_4=768796&kwp_1=386166

Well that article is just outstanding.  Thank you for the read.

I suspect Avery's conviction will be overturned at some point... and it should be.  Not sure if he did it or not, but had the Manitowac PD followed appropriate procedures, Avery would have never been able to make the framed defense.  Those procedures are there for a reason, to prevent exactly what happened. That alone = reasonable doubt because they bungled this investigation every step of the way the moment they allowed someone with a conflict of interest to be involved in it.  If there's a retrial far away from Wisconsin, Avery will walk.

I would like to see a retrial, but that documentary may have tainted the waters so badly everywhere that it's no longer possible.

Again, we're talking about a documentary that the initial victim refused to participate in because of their behavior.  To me, that says all i need to hear.

And the tone deaf prosecutors of course are appealing.

Good lord, cut your losses before the losses also include your jobs. And freedom of your police department.

If I was involved with this case, I would encourage everyone to wash their hands of this. Unless your future plans involve solely being a reality TV personality, I don't see how any of these people can realistically expect to have jobs outside of Manitowoc County if Netflix actually makes a Season 2.

Never underestimate stubbornness caused by pride.

It makes me ill. The same sort of ill that the West Memphis 3 case brought about for years.

I watched it this weekend while getting a good start on the prospect handbook. So, it's possible I missed some too. But, it was good. I know one thing. If I ever end up in a bad situation where I think I'm wrongly accused, I want Steven Avery's lawyer.

As much work as she did for Steven Avery, she barely got any response on it.

Much of the story was on the kid and his ever-changing situation over those two years.

I feel bad for Steven's parents. And, I probably feel bad for the kid''s mom too, though that got interesting in the latter episodes too.

Hmmmm... but I doubt it. The facts (including those that aren't mentioned in the documentary) are still there.

Are you talking about Dassey or Avery? I'm talking about Dassey. There is no evidence whatsoever connecting Dassey to the murder except his laughable confession.

Avery deserves a new trial, IMO, but there is certainly at least some evidence against him.

The only question I have is how much of the reality we are seeing. The Netflix show is showing one side...

I have read every available piece of information I can find on this case, including 22,000 pages of court transcripts, and many viewpoints from both sides.

My conclusion is that when it comes to Steven Avery, you are correct. I believe there is enough mishandling of the investigation, suspicious behavior by the cops and prosecutors, and failure from his defense, that Avery deserves a new trial. But yes, there is more that we aren't seeing on MaM that isn't good for Avery. He'll never be considered for a pardon, he'll need to get a new trial.

Not Dassey though. Not one shred of evidence that corroborates the State's version of events, aside from his confession. There are a few rumors, theories, second hand statements, etc., but nothing that I'd classify as evidence. Someone claimed he came home that night with blood on his jeans. But no bloody jeans were recovered, so without that evidence we have no idea what was on his jeans, if anything.

I find it simply beyond plausible that someone as slow as Dassey committed everything that the State's version of events would have required, without leaving one shred of physical evidence behind.

It's an outright shame that he's spent a day in jail, let alone 12 years.
