Here's the thing Lucas did which threw me for a complete loop. I think many of us watched and enjoyed Willow as a film.

There was also a trilogy of novels which followed it:

The Chronicles of the Shadow War, written by Chris Claremont based on some sort of outline by George Lucas, contains three novels: Shadow Moon, Shadow Dawn & Shadow Star. Look them up, since you most likely never heard of them.

One for W, second for T, and a conclusion for F.

I do love Lucas' classic work, it's some of my favorite childhood memories, but I don't think it was getting old that was the issue, it was stubbornness and caring more about merchandising than the product.

Lucas and Spielberg should be tied at the hip in regards to any criticism, yet they're not. Spielberg isn't so stubborn, he's given away projects that he didn't agree with the vision on. Aside from Jurassic Park, Spielberg no longer does films that can be counted on for huge merchandising revenues except for the ones he has done with Lucas. No one's buying "Lincoln" or "Munich" action figures.

They had very different career arcs. Lucas was much more of a "serious" filmmaker when he broke onto the scene; his first film was the critically-applauded and audience-ignored THX-1138. He went on to create American Graffiti, which gave him enough publicity to delve into his "real" passion... Schlocky, action-oriented fare that harkened back to the Saturday morning serials he watched as a child.

I'd argue the merchandising was a byproduct of the films he wanted to create, not the other way around. Unfortunately, at some point along the way he lost touch with what made those schlocky, action-oriented films fun for audiences.

I haven't read the novels but I've read hundreds of Claremont comics.

Claremont is the king of "WTF". He basically broke the X-universe for Marvel to the point where it's entirely incomprehensible.

Not just a little confusing... Completely ****ing incomprehensible.

Okay ... I finally started Star Wars for the first time about two months ago and saw The Force Awakens for the first time today. I skimmed this thread, and I have to agree that it would be lame if Rey was Luke's daughter. I like Brock's argument about Ren ****ing up the process of probing Rey's mind ... I suppose that's long forgotten, but you'll have to find the post yourself since I lost it in my hurry.

If anyone else suggested this, I must have missed it ... is it possible that Rey doesn't have a father (or mother, for that matter)? Supposedly Anakin didn't, and his midichlorian count was off the charts. This reminds me of Kylo Ren - he'll never be an impressive villain; he's Han Solo's son (don't get me wrong here - Han's my favorite - I'm just talking good ol' fashioned genetics). To resume, I've seen the argument that Palpatine was behind the creation of Anakin ... who knows. If this is the case, it's kind of ironic that he did eventually bring balance to the force by killing the Emperor. But either Rey is more attuned to her senses than Luke or else the force is stronger with her. Unless Luke and Leia had a rendezvous and had to hide the evidence (I'm not suggesting this, lol ... ugh), I think perhaps someone figured out how to repeat the process. Given Anakin's history, it would be risky doings, but it would explain the emphasis put on her meeting with Luke. I personally would like Qui-Gon Jinn to be behind this.

If any of this is either too obvious or too far fetched, I'm sorry. It is my first time through, after all. :)

Do I need to watch anything else, or should I start over with the saga? (Okay, okay ... I confess I've seen the original trilogy episodes times in the last month to rouse my family's concern about the state of my mental health ... but ... Brock probably watches them this much year round. What can I say? :))

Jesus Christ. Don't ever bring up midichlorian again. Your life may be in danger!  :)

Okay. Maybe that's a bit far fetched.

Hey Brock. What are your thoughts on the Rebels series? It's grown on me pretty good.

I haven't watched the second season. I finished the first season, said "meh", and then resolved myself to letting the show play out for awhile and then binge-watching it.

But I heard it improves quite a bit in the second season.

It does improve greatly in the 2nd season.
