Twins Trade Chris Herrmann

The Twins have traded catcher Chris Herrmann to the Arizona Diamondback for outfielder Daniel Palka, tweets Dustin Morse.

The 23-year-old Palka, a left handed hitting outfield/first baseman drafted in the third round in 2013, spent the 2015 season in the Diamondbacks' high-A affiliate in Visalia where he hit .280/.352/.532 with 29 home runs (4th in the California League) and 36 doubles (3rd). The 2014 Baseball Prospectus Annual described Palka as having "mouth-watering power" and that he "reads pitches well". In addition to the power numbers, he swiped 24 bases in 31 attempts showing that he has speed to be more than just a thumper.

Herrmann spent the 2015 season split between Rochester and Minnesota, but spent portions of the last four years with the big league club, hitting .181 with little power.

Why on earth does Atlanta want Herrmann? He's like Butera except he hasn't hit as well and he's not as good defensively.

This also confirms the obvious that the Twins will be getting a new catcher at some point. That's good.

Nice trade, TR. This reminds me of the Butera trade...

D-Backs 29th best prospect, 1B/DH just what we don't have enough of. Do we have a lot of catchers even bad ones?

If we're trading Hermann, it almost certainly means the team is pretty intent on addressing catcher this offseason.

Clearing the 40-man from these ever-tempting type of players seems like a win itself.

This really should tell us what good defensive catching is worth to ML teams.  I never in a million years ht we'd get  a decent prospect for Herrman.  I thought he was a non-tender candidate.  This also clears up a 40 spott as this kid won't need to be added till next year.

Agree with comments above...Palka is as much suspect as prospect, but a fine return for Hermann.

But what I really like about the deal is, it means Hermann isn't a fallback C option for the Twins next yr. it helps me believe C will be addressed through trade or FA.

Fine deal, but keep in mind he was a 23 (now 24) year old in the hitters paradise California League.

Drafted out of college, moved up a level each year, and hit pretty well at each stop.   AA/AAA next year; with a possibility of a debut at age 24/25.

In 2014 there was a game the Twins won that was all Hermann's fault. I think he had a career game.

He seemed a good guy. I wish him the best.

The potential upside of Palka looks significant. I like this trade.

FWIW, he was a good guy when I talked to him. Loved to break down pitch selection and such. And he was very candid about his offensive struggles.

Herrmann really has no business being on a major league roster, so getting anything for him is a win. Trading him for a dude with power? Even bigger win. Maybe this dude becomes Collabello and a cheap bench/1b depth for cheap for a year or two. Either way, good move. Can't teach power

Now let's cross our fingers that the goal is a starting catcher so Suzuki can play a perfect role as a backup. And not just AJ.
