Reasoning on starting pitching rotation

Like it had been hinted, Scot Diamond will be slotted into Monday with the reasoning that Scot has already pitched 113.2 combined IP with a career high of last yrs 162 IP .

Cole DeVries and Samuel Deduno are scheduled for game 2 following Liriano on FRI. Assuming its DeVries, after his gem tonight, does the organization have any idea that Cole's 100 combined IP are already more than he threw in either of the past 2 years...90 last yr 90.1 in 2010 as he was a fulltime reliever. That's ok tho???

 

PJ Walters, who is out of options & must return from his rehab, is scheduled for a Thur ROC start & then Tue with the Twins, as his rehab time will be done--or close to it. He had a setback & is returning to MN for a checkup on Mon.

Guess that means Duensing is back in the pen after the SUN game or, like I believe, Deduno is on a start to start basis, but is out of options also

I hope that they have the guts to shut down starters who might damage their ability to pitch well next year. This is a lost season, and we need Diamond and others to have live arms next year.

 

I would rather lose some extra games this year and have live arms next year.

I cant disagree with ya more. How do you build arm strength if you dont pitch??

Diamond should easily be able to get to 200 IP this year from 163, about a 20% increase which is what MN often talks about. Getting to 200 is a nice round number to shoot for. Can shut him down after that, if needed.

However, what is the distance you go with DeVries?? Not a guy you're probably looking at for the future, will they go past their own rules??

Liam Hendriks, while drivin many crazy, is also @ 91.2 IP combinedbut had 162.2 IP combined last yr, so he should be fine getting to a combined 200

PJ Walters & Sam Deduno should also be good to go for IP as they were over 100IP each last yr.

Possible the rotation could get worse as the year gets into Sept w/Frankie dealt & Diamon/DeVries shut down???

The rest of the yr should show if MN/Gardy make up the rules for certain players & not so much for others.

I was not expressing any opinion as to any specific number of innings. My point is that it makes sense to be conservative, since the Twins are not in a pennant race and cannot afford dead arms next year. Also, I would think that there are other ways to build arm strength, such as lifting weights and doing pushups.

 

I am all in favor of building arm strength, but believe that the focus ought to be on next year and the year after.

I'm wondering if it is different for someone like De Vries, who last year spent more than half the season in the bullpen. I think being smart with his innings is wise, but it's a completely different role pitching once every fifth day instead of potentially 3-4 times a week? It's also possible that De Vries and/or Deduno would slot nicely into the long-relief role as well. It's also of note that Diamond and Hendriks are the two, of the above mentioned, that would be considered prospects and they would be more cautious with.

Are you seriously suggesting that if Diamond has 1 to 3 less starts this year it will 'save' his arm for next year?

Come September, the Twins could go with a 6 or 7 pitcher rotation, try out potential guys et al. Come seasons end, the Twin will have to make decisions if they want to kep the Deduno and Walters on the 40-man roster, or just resign them as free agents (minors) depending on who they have to protect and all. But if they have the spots open (and if they trade Capps, Span, Liriano and make decisions on Toshi, Valencia and Casilla...they will have 4-5 opens spots to immediately add guys from the minors).

Worst case, the Twins can roll out a 6 man rotation of Pavano, Blackburn, Diamond, De Vries, Hendriks, and Walters (if he comes back) and use Deduno as a long reliever or to fill in if Walters/Pavano doesn't come back. The Twins do have options, but I have to think they will think to 2013 and try to determine what options they have on roster and what holes they will need to fill via free agency. I believe this will be expecially true for Blackburn, De Vries, Walters and Hendriks. Blackburn to see if he can regain his sinker, De Vries if he can continue to provide 5-7 quality innings, Walters the same, and if Hendriks can make the leap as he seems to be able to dominate AAA. 3-4 inhouse options coudl put the Twins into the market of Grienke, but if not, I would look for them to consider multiple, lower costs alternatives because there is a huge lack of #1's available in our system.
