Gophers Football

Leidner was 10/19, and many of his completions were inaccurate enough that it didn't allow for any yards after the catch. I wouldn't call him efficient today.

Rodney Smith and Shannon Brooks are such a great tandem, I wonder what they would look like with a good quarterback.

He also had a handful of drops from his receivers and some poor route-running that he put the incompletion into a spot where no one had a chance to intercept it. Sometimes an incompletion isn't just a 0-1 on the stat line.

I'm glad the Gophers are back to the formula they need to win on offense. Just keep giving Brooks and Smith the ball, and take the ball out of Leidner's hands. Those 2 have a chance to play at the NFL level.... Leidner maybe could go the route of Marquise Gray and transition to FB/TE.

On a side note: Illinois is 2-6 under Lovie Smith in his 1st year with the program. Let's say they want to move on and find a new coach... Well, that's going to be pretty difficult, considering his buy out is $19.34 million (!!)

Some of these buy out amounts has to be absolutely crippling to the programs, so they're stuck with these coaches even if they're terrible. Thank God Claeys buy out is only $500k.

Leidner through 7 starts:

107/186 (57.5%), 1274 yards (182/gm.), 5 td, 5 int, and the lowest passer rating of his career.

Those aren't even mediocre numbers, those are awful.

And this from our 5th year senhor with a laughably easy schedule.

I get their may not be better options this year, but let's not pretend he's been anything but awful.

Leidner has not been good, but part of the problem is the talent around him. Receivers that can't get open and drop too many balls when they do combined with an O-line that is much better run blocking than pass protecting contribute to the problem.

That would be a valid excuse if Leidner was a Sophomore and was putting up below average numbers.

He's a 5th year senior (don't leaders make those around them better? ), putting up laughably terrible numbers.

There are plenty of programs around the country that don't have 4 and 5 star wide receivers, and yet their QB is still able to put up at least mediocre numbers.

Good QB'S throw their receivers open by throwing it to a spot as soon as the receiver breaks. Leidner doesn't do that, he looks for a guy to be open before he'll throw it.

He also misses badly a few times every game.

Worst rule in college football. The nfl has done a pretty rational job of implementing, but college has been terrible.

This team is 7-2, how things would be different with competent qb play. Luckily, the tram is still young. I don't really care if Claus is still the coach, they still need talent. The only way to get talent is by being good. Nebraska just got hammered by Ohio state, and i feel the gophers match up well with them. Again, the gophers could find themselves in a conference deciding game with Wisconsin.

While the losses shouldn't have happened, I'd say this team is playing ok this year. It's a shame there isn't a better qb on the roster, bit Mitch is gritty and has a lot of wins to his credit. Next weekend will be yuge.

The Gophers would be 9-0 with a mediocre QB, you are correct on that.

As it stands, we have no chance of beating Wisconsin with Leidner as QB, so it doesn't really matter what we do against Nebraska.

Leidner has some wins against crappy competition. He hasn't won many big games.

What is his record against Wisconsin and Iowa? One win combined, I believe?

And they have yet to beat anyone this season.

Well yeah, but going for a high knockout hit with the game already in hand and a minute left isn't the smartest thing to do either.

Meh, not really what I saw. Thought the call was pretty bogus and was suspect it took the ref about 3-5 seconds to drop the flag after the play.

I don't think Rallis was trying to hurt him.

I had a convo with a friend from South Dakota State's coaching staff who watched the game after their rivalry game win, and he had the observation that Leidner is a guy with all the tools you could ever want in a QB. His prediction was that Leidner is in a QB competition for someone in the NFL within 5 years. He's run a pro system as well, so he'll take less time to adapt to the pros, helping his development.

That's the thing that makes me the most upset. I would wonder if the coaching he's received is as much behind his issues as Leidner himself.

Is one of those tools throwing a football? I don't even think Mitch knows where the ball will end up half the time. It's downright cringe worthy.

QB? No chance. I could see him catching onto a practice squad as an H-back maybe. Which is where he should be playing in college as well.

I didn't know Todd McShay coaches at South Dakota State.

I guess we'll have to wait 5 years to see if this is accurate.

I'm...skeptical.  Highly skeptical.

I know the NFL is experiencing a lack of good QBs in the league.... But if Leidner is in a QB competition 5 years down the road, shut down the NFL.

The issue is that you see the ability to make the needed throws. And then you see interceptions like he threw at the end of the game or you see balls all over the place in other games. It's just crazy to me how much he can change from game to game in his ability to spot a football.

Leidner isn't very good and probably shouldn't have been starting for going on 3+ years, but the guy hasn't hasn't exactly had a star studded receiving core to throw to.

Williams......and?

It's not that bad. Wolitarsky is really good and the other receivers are solid. Ask CJ Beathard if he'd like to trade receiver groups.

  • 2 weeks later...

Leidner is probably a less-gifted Tim Tebow and Tebow got meaningful snaps almost entirely because of his physical gifts. Some NFL suspects have become solid pros, but developing accuracy this late in the game is a real long shot for Leidner.

I get your point, but Tebow was extremely productive in college. Some in the NFL got teased by that combination of production and size, and gambled they could tweak a couple of things.

There has been no such tease by Leidner, unless it's as an H back type.
