Article: Game Thread: Twins @ Yankees, 8/17 @ 6:05pm CT

As predictable as usual against those f'ing Yankees.  It was just a question as to who was going to get the walkoff.  Terrible at-bats against Betances and Miller (except for Sano) in the last 3 innings.  Very poor management of the bullpen by Molitor.  Unless he pitched too much over the weekend, then Jepsen should have been out there in the 10th.  It's not like he had thrown many pitches in the 9th.  Perkins forgot his Closer Disease meds and he went back to being terrible again.  But another typical loss at Yankee Stadium to that P-O-S team.  It's only surprising that it didn't end with a home run.

Many goats, but it boils down to Gibson giving up a 3r HR on an 0-2 count in the first, and using 107 pitches without getting an out in the 6th.

A lot of pitches for a guy who should be getting a lot more groundballs and having relatively quick AB's. Not a good night for Gibby.

I know that Suzuki gets hammered on here for his bat and poor framing. However, I have been watching where he sets up and where our pitchers throw. It sure seems that when I have been watching lately, that our pitchers are getting pounded, but they are actually throwing right where Suzuki is asking for it.

Is it possible that Suzuki or the Twins are doing a really bad job of pitch selections and placements? Been the case most of tonight and last week, and I have been watching hard. There have been some missed locations, but mostly when we get hit, its right where he asks for it.

Yeah I would agree. This is honestly where the coaching and analytic staff helps.

And when our pitchers are mowing them down, they're what, missing their spots?  I find that hard to believe.  Gibson was getting clobbered because he was falling behind and had to come in to good hitters swinging out of their shoes.  Happens a lot against the Yankees and Jays it seems...

With that, the twins drop to 5-175 in their last 180 against the Yankees.

That makes me kind of nostalgic for Gardenhire.    Gardy's Twins played the Yankees with all the poise and guile that Cruise played poker with in Stripes...

Why our pitchers struggle with the stupid Yankees -- there is no power pitchers to zip anything by them.  They have to get them out by nibbling or off-speed stuff that might fool them.  The Yankees have been incredibly disciplined at the plate for YEARS and work the count over and over and over again.  Gibson had the look of the pitcher who was on the defensive all nite -- trying to find the corners and trying to get the hitters to bite.  The top 6 in that order won't go for that.  Fien got the middle of the order in the 8th and he went after it and got 1-2-3.  Jepsen had the bottom of the order and went after them and got 1-2-3.  Perkins didn't have the oomph behind his fastball or the location to get it by anybody and he got whipped.

I watched all the condensed games since May's start, and honestly, most of the hits are on pitches thrown exactly where they were called for. Often its some sort of fastball or changeup in a very hittable location.

Not many breaking balls being called for, and not many asked for outside of the zone.

Jepsen had a good inning. That's it. Fien had a good stat line.

Gibson did not pitch inside all might (that I saw). That's on everyone, including the catcher and coaches.

I didn't give us much of a chance when we didn't score in the 10th, but when Perkins came in I gave us no chance.

It's reached the point where you almost hope he goes on the DL for what turns out to have been a nagging injury that the vaunted training staff has been working on for at least a month.

He just doesn't seem right, and it's past the point of bad luck following the good luck he had earlier.

You could blame it on a dead arm, though he was throwing harder tonight on both pitches than his season averages.
