Food and other such holidays

Happy Thursday!

Today is National Brownie Day! Brownies aren't my favourite dessert, but every once in a while they hit the spot! Especially if they're filled with caramel!

On this day in 1980, John Lennon was shot 4 times and killed on the way back to his NYC apartment....

Also, on this day in 1941, the U.S. declares war on Japan 1 day after the Pearl Harbor attack.

Geez, Van ... and in other happy news ...

I'm not a huge brownie connoisseur but there are a few a like. I know it's from a mix, but Trader Joe's truffle brownie mix is excellent and very easy to make.

I know.... Usually this thread is full of positivity! Then I looked through the news on this day in history, and they were all depressing....

Yay! I'm unrestricted! :)

Doesn't mean I can run out and eat everything high in fat and protein I can find, but I'm easing back in! Yay! And as for the cause, I'm still a mystery, but not unique. Twenty percent who have a case of accute pancreatitis never really know why.

Yikes, glad to hear you are doing ok. Just caught up on this thread, that sounded pretty scary.

Now go eat a bunch of steaks!

Today is National Pastry Day! I sure could go for an apple turnover right about now!

Happy 100th birthday Kirk Douglas! That guy could certainly be on the Mount Rushmore of movie stars... What's your favorite Kirk Douglas flick?

On this day in 1965, "A Charlie Brown Christmas" made its' debut on TV! The BIG executives at CBS were anticipating disaster for the movie.... No laugh track?! JAZZ music?! A depressed lead character?! Preposterous, this will never work they say..... Well, not only did it work, it's played on TV every year since then.

I remember seeing Charlie Brown Christmas that first time. :)

Kirk Douglas; lots of good ones but Spartacus still has to be best, along with maybe Lust for Life.

And of course The Final Countdown. And The War Wagon. And...

Pretty lame national days....but it is national computer security awareness day (or something like that).

Go change all your passwords (and then, good luck getting in anywhere).

Just because; here are some password security questions that are slightly off the beaten path.

So I have a Christmas gift question that's food related!

My mom is big into making her own salad dressings, and I'm trying to find a nice looking salad dressing container/holder for her homemade dressings.

Any idea on where to look for one of those?

Kind of hard to say, as I prefer local stores......but it is a good idea. Make sure she can have it be for multiple uses and can go in the fridge.

My wife does the same and she has one of these, loves it and uses it all the time.

I lost about a week of baking time due to circumstances beyond my control but I've made about 10 batches of pebernodder, a batch of Nut-Goodie thumbprint cookies and a large batch of sugar cutout cookies. The cutouts, half are sugared pre-baked and the other half will be frosted/decorated this week. Oh, and I made a batch of peppermint bark.

That's it this year. I've made molasses cookies, Swedish pepper cookies, spritz, Linzer cookies and various other kinds over the years. I like to vary it year to year.

Who says the girl scouts have the cookie market cornered? I say we start up "Chi's Christmas Cookies!" and give those girls a run for their money.

I have a feeling this day is right up ChiTown's wheelhouse!

Today is National Cocoa Day! I sure do love me some hot cocoa on a chilly day. Especially with some mini marshmallows on top!

Today is also National Violin Day! The beauty of the violin is it could be included in several genres of music... For us mid-20s folks, we have Lindsey Stirling killing it on violin... Who's your favorite violinist?

On this day in 2003, Operation Red Dawn was underway, and led to the capture of Saddam Hussein!

Ya, because us in our 50s don't know who lindsay sterling is..... :)

I love cocoa, love it, love it, love it.....

Hey some older folks wouldn't know who she is! My dad is 57 and I guarantee he wouldn't know who she is.

Okay ... hot chocolate ... I'm gonna let y'all in on a secret ... the best I've ever had ... truly, ever ... is this right here:

http://chocolategarden.com/drinking_chocolate.htm

I know it looks weird, and you make it with hot water, and I was skeptical given both those ... but ... THE! BEST!

And that place also has the best truffles ... O!M!G!

They get a huge order from me every year when I make up gift bags for everyone around me.

4 year anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy in Newtown, CT..... 20 1st grade babies and 6 staff members were taken way too early from the world by Adam Lanza that day.... It's still among the worst mass shootings in US history.

On a positive note, on this day in 1977, "Saturday Night Fever" made its' debut in the theaters! As a result, the disco fever shot up to unthinkable levels. Why is it so easy for me to picture Mike, Craig, and Chi wearing bell bottoms and getting their boogie on?
