Food and other such holidays

Happy Friday!

Today is National Chocolate Day! One of my new favorite indulgences is dark chocolate covered pretzel chips you get at Costco. Holy buckets those things are like crack. Also, any chocolate that includes peanut butter or caramel are top notch choices.

Today is also National Breadstick Day! Along with ice cream, bread is my weakness... Nothing better than having some pasta, and dunking a breadstick or 2 in the sauce...

Today is also National Frankenstein Day! Maybe it's a generational thing, or that he's been around for so long. IMO Frankenstein doesn't get enough love during the Halloween season.

Finally, on this day in 1886, the Statue of Liberty opened its doors for tourists to see! It was a day long dedication led by President Grover Cleveland at the time. On this particular day, the fog was so dense that it was hard to see Lady Liberty from the shore. This is an actual picture taken of the boat traffic near the Statue of Liberty that day:

I love chocolate ... as a result of that, I won't be celebrating National Chocolate Day today because it's my day off work and I refuse to set foot outdoors. If you get my vague train of thought there ...

I skimmed the last 15,000 pages since I last occupied this forum, and I just want to go on record and say there's nothing scary about flying monkeys.

It's also Halloween party weekend! I'm going to one that is costume mandatory (sigh) and one that is not (yay!) I'll be critiquing the food at the costume mandatory one, on this week's episode of "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives!"

I'll go with dark chocolate tim tams, if I can find them. Will have to check World Market and (gasp!) Target.

I was also informed by the City of Minneapolis that today they mail out the Snow Emergency brochures. Yay, winter.

Today is National Hermit Day! It only takes seven years of absentia before someone is declared legally dead; this is something I would like to eventually accomplish in life.

More importantly, it's National Cat Day! I want to say we need more cats in this world, but we really don't ... we need more responsible cat owners, and I personally need (want) more cats in my life.

My aunt's cat:

The cat who condescended to let me sleep in its bed at the Airbnb I rented when I foolishly traveled to VA the other week:

And a presumably skilled hunter I briefly encountered as I left the Airbnb to wait for an Uber ride which ended up costing me $100 thanks to surge pricing, a marketing scheme used to take advantage of first year UVA students who aren't allowed to have cars.

And a kitty I wish I could adopt and might shed a tear or two over when his page disappears and I can no longer behold his adorableness. I've always wanted a black cat. :'(

Today is a lot of days.....the two that interest me are:

Author's day

Clazone day

I love a good calzone, but it is so much dough that I don't eat them much/at all anymore.

I think I should either buy a book or write a poem, or both....

Calzones are okay. Really just a folded over and sealed pizza. But what's a clazone?

I'm with you, Mike. Usually give up on the dough halfway through, and focus on the filling after that.

Today is also National Deep Fried Clams Day! That and calamari are right up there as my favorite appetizers to get at restaurants. Especially with a little remoulade sauce...

On this day in 1952, the US detonates the first full-scale thermonuclear weapon on the island of Elugelab in Enewetak Atoll, in the Pacific Ocean. This was the start of the Cold War arms race between the US and USSR.

Also, on this day in 1512, Michelangelo's masterpiece is officially open for the public to view in the Sistine Chapel! It took him 4 years to complete the paintings... And fun fact: Michelangelo was a sculptor who did not enjoy painting. In fact, he wrote a poem during the process about the torture he was feeling by painting this design. Any of you had the pleasure of seeing this in person?

Any books on your radar to read during the off-season?

On my list is Bryan Cranston's new biography "A Life In Parts" and "A Life Well Played" Arnold Palmer's biography.

I just want to hibernate. I'm one of those creatures. And taking vitamin D supplements do not help.

Me too. It's going to be a loooong off-season. Might as well grab a blanket, build a fire, and stay cozy in the Sports Bar until April!

Maybe a review of Spanish, in case we really do need to flee to Ecuador.

Otherwise, at the urging of my spouse, John Rawls A Theory of Justice. Yeah I know yesterday was supposed to be scary day.

Per the Election Thread, we all know your plan......

Finding a boat to take you to Cuba! :)

Actually, my desire is to find an island somehwere ... but honestly, what good does that do? I'll go back to work ... continue the slog ...

You could always start a beach side seafood bar and grill! Or teach tourists how to boogie board.

Edit: The bar could be called "ChiTown's Cuts: Fresh Shrimp and Lobster caught daily!"

Running a restaurant means never having another day off in your lifetime! But the dream of it sounds good.

Well, we're done with baseball for the year. With no big free agents to talk about signing, this could be a long off-season... Fortunately we have food to talk about!

Today is National Sandwich Day! In the past I've said I could eat pizza everyday, and that's mostly true. However, I really could eat a sandwich every single day and not get tired of it. Favorite sandwiches, ranked:

- Reuben

- Breakfast Sandwich - bacon or sausage, egg, cheese on a croissant or english muffin

- Cuban

- BLT

- Pulled Pork

- Lobster Roll

- Po Boy - preferably shrimp

- Hot Ham and Cheese

- Grilled Cheese

- French Dip

- PB&J

- getting struck by a bus

- Tuna Salad

- Egg Salad

Today is also National Men Make Dinner Day! You know the drill, guys. Get to work prepping a nice meal tonight.

On this day in 1957, a soviet dog named Laika became the first animal to travel in space, and orbit around the Earth! Unfortunately for poor Laika, the USSR did not have a re-entry plan for her, so she passed away for the experiment....
