Today is National Gumbo Day! The CEO of the company I work at is from Louisiana, and makes an incredible gumbo... Didn't really experience it until I moved to the south.

Today is also National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day! If only my parents weren't 1,500+ miles away, I'd do that on this beautiful fall day.

Today is also National Freethought Day! A day to encourage people to be free thinkers and to base opinions on facts, science, logic and reason. Someone please CC Donald Trump to do this once.

Finally, on this day in 1810, Crown Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen throw a wedding party, and all of Munich, Germany is invited. The party was a big success, so they repeated the same party next year.... and the year after that, so on and so forth. This party is now known as Oktoberfest!

Has anyone traveled overseas to attend Oktoberfest? That is certainly on my bucket list of things to do.

Also, to visit Italy and enjoy the wine and delicious food...

I was in Munich for New Years but not for Oktoberfest.

I've been to Germany during Oktoberfest, which ironically is mostly in September.

There is lots of beer............like, I mean......lots.

Beer and schnitzel is a match made in heaven.

You and Craig will be hearing from me asking for suggestions when the dream becomes a reality!

I was in Munich for work and Oktoberfest just happened to be happening right then. I didn't have much free time so I didn't go to the actual fest and glad I didn't hearing from my colleagues who did. Not my thing. Just lots of big beer tents. I opted to be touristy and had a beer and some food at the Hofbrauhaus instead.

Little did I know this thread was full of world travelers! My passport is pretty depressing.... Canada and Dominican Republic are my only international trips so far.... But, I get to add Mexico to the list next June for my best friend's wedding!

Well, let's see what's in my passport ...

Australia

New Zealand

Japan

All around Europe

Brazil

Argentina

Paraguay

My forays into Canada and Mexico were before passports were required, although I did use it quite frequently coming and going from Canada because with my work permit, it was just easier to have it if ever stopped and questioned. Which I was. On more than one occasion. Because, well, I'm an untrustworthy 'merican.

Wow! Out of all destinations you've been to, which is your favorite/most memorable place you've visited?

Go to Peru before they close Machu Pichu. Go on a Sunday. If you can, go during the world cup.

The company I work for is moving to an unlimited PTO program in 2017, and I'm going to take full advantage when the time comes... Right now we have 3 weeks + 4 sick days, and I try to save up as much as possible to take 2+ weeks off during Xmas to spend time with family.

I don't think I have a favorite. To say I love Paris seems trite but I love Paris. And I've had varying memorable experiences. My trip to Australia/New Zealand probably remains the highlight. My sister and I did this: http://www.qctrack.co.nz/ It was a 4-day hike through the Marlborough Sounds. Day 1 was so-so in difficult ... just one big up followed by a long down. Day two was around an inlet, no biggie. It was the easiest and shortest day. Day 3 was the most grueling ... a lot of up, all day, on a ridge trail. My muscles were sore. Then came the point in the day to start hiking down. I nearly fell over ... different use of the muscles. I was tired. The final day was going to be a little more like day 3 but shorter. And we had to be at our pick up point on schedule, or miss the ferry back. Got up and it was damp, gray, drizzly, chilly. My muscles are sore and I'm prepared for the most miserable day of my life. We got an early start and started going up, up ... all of a sudden, we broke through the ground cover and it was sunny and blue skies above the clouds. Life was good again. And it was just beautiful and amazing.

But then there was the 4 days of sailing through the Whitsunday Islands in Australia and seeing whales, unintentionally and really up close.

Killing some time in the airport before my flight back to Minnesota...

Today is National Dessert Day! The options are endless for this particular day... Favorite desserts, ranked:

-Ice Cream (milkshakes, sundaes, malts, etc.)

- Cake (chocolate, red velvet, angel food)

- Cupcakes (cake's little brother/sister!)

- Cookies (snickerdoodle, macadamia nut, peanut butter, chocolate chip)

- Peach Cobbler

- Pie (Apple, cherry, pecan)

Let your freak flag fly today and get creative with your desserts!

Today is also National Be Bald and Be Free Day! We've talked about this before. I'm terrified of eventually losing my hair. It's still holding strong after 26 years! Crossing fingers it still continues to grow back.

Finally, on this day in 1947, US Air Force Captain Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound!

Creme brulee is probably my biggest weakness.

We did a tasting menu last weekend....they said it would be 5 courses, what they didn't say was that those would be on something like 18 different dishes, including 4 desserts....

I love those types of restaurants and events. I'd rather have small plates and try a variety of dishes at a restaurant over a large portion of one item.

In memory of my brother: Shrimp Cocktail. At this one buffet our family went to now and then, that's what Bob and I filled up on (again) after the main courses. I enjoyed some last night, at this charity fundraiser event where I probably wiped out the profits single-handed.
