Because Riggs was the one talking smack about male superiority.

And it's not like Johhny Mac playing Serena today because Riggs was never even particularly good when he was in his prime.

Ahh, okay that makes sense. They wanted him to back up the trash talk. At least King made him look silly on national TV!

I was wrong there.  Riggs was actually #1 for like three years.  Still never the player Johnny Mac was but obviously good enough to be #1 for awhile.

Some people forget this part though

In 1973, Riggs saw an opportunity to both make money and to draw attention to the sport of tennis. He came out of retirement to challenge one of the world's greatest female players to a match, claiming that the female game was inferior and that a top female player could not beat him, even at the age of 55. After Billie Jean King declined, he challenged Margaret Court, 30 years old and the top female player in the world. In their May 13, 1973, Mother's Day match in Ramona, California, Riggs used his drop shots and lobs to keep an unprepared Court off balance. His easy 6–2, 6–1 victory landed Riggs on the cover of both Sports Illustrated and Time magazine. The match was called the "Mother's Day Massacre".

Following Court's loss to Riggs, King accepted his challenge, and on September 20, 1973, the two met in the Houston Astrodome, in a match billed as The Battle of the Sexes. King beat Riggs, 6–4, 6–3, 6–3 for the $100,000 winner-take-all prize. Unlike a similar match between Jimmy Connors and Martina Navratilova in 1992, in which the rules were altered to favor the female player, this match was played using the normal rules of tennis.

According to an extensive article by the ESPN program Outside the Lines,[10] Riggs took advantage of the overwhelming odds against King and threw the match to get his debts to the mob erased. This would confirm the suspicions held by many of Riggs' peers, including Don Budge. On the other hand, the article says Riggs' close friend and estate executor Lornie Kuhle vehemently denied Riggs was ever in debt to the mob or received a payoff from them.

The thing about the game of tennis ... esp. women's tennis through the years ... it's a VERY different game with women today as it was years ago. I mean, look at some old clips of Chris Everett ... and compare her play to Serena Williams. Martina brought the power game to women's tennis and that's just been increasing every since.

It is World Peace Day.

It's also Sophia Loren's birthday.

Everything else is cancelled.

You mean you don't want to partake in National Pecan Cookie Day? Because I certainly do!

Also, on this day in 1937, author J.R.R. Tolkien publishes a new book in London that gains wild popularity... In fact, it's still a classic today! That book is, "The Hobbit".

Much better than Lord of the Rings....

I'm a fan of peace, so will try to be peaceful today.

I'm also a fan of pecan cookies (we called them pecan sandies) so will be happy to participate in that.

But 'no' to 'The Hobbit.' I tried many times, but just couldn't do it. Not. My. Genre.

Interesting, why do you say that? I'm a fan of both btw.

Oh, I like them both. Some of the few books I kept when I moved....

but LOTR has too much non-plot for me. The Hobbit is just a fun ride. LOTR tries too hard to build a mythos and cultures. I can find it tedious at times.

Another day where BIG National Holiday wants us to put on 10 lbs...

Today is National Ice Cream Cone Day! As much as I love ice cream, I've been attending too many events this week where drinks and food have been consumed. Have to pass on this today.

Today is also National White Chocolate Day! We recently bought a bag of white chocolate mini kit-kat wafers.. Those things are like crack.

Today is also Car Free Day! A day where you're supposed to leave your car at home, and use public transportation. I've already broken the rules on this day.
