Food and other such holidays

Today is the keynote of the annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, of which I'm watching the live stream.

Probably doesn't mean much to the rest of you, but for me it's like Game 1 of the World Series.

Happy Thursday!

Today is National Fudge Day! Any day with chocolate is a good day in my book. Best fudge flavors, ranked:

- Peanut Butter Chocolate

- Turtle

- Butter Pecan

- Mint Chocolate

- Maple Walnut

Today is also National Dump the Pump Day! A day where you're supposed to forgo driving and use public transportation. Since public transportation sucks in Austin, and Lyft/Uber are still gone, that's going to be a tough one to accomplish.

You can't bike to work there?

I've been riding a bike to/from work these days. While I have my own bike and do use it for longer recreational rides, it's kind of a pita to get it out for the quick trips and/or errands. So, I've been using Divvy bikes to commute to work, run simple errands, basically for quick transportation to/from places around town. Since there's a Divvy station just a block and a half from home, and one right next to where I work, it's pretty easy. Since it's a bike-sharing program, and available to the public, I'd say it's using public transportation. I'll still drive to my tennis club this morning, with a stop at Salvation Army with another carload of donations, but I'll come home, park my car, and Divvy to work. :)

Fudge? It's okay.

I do have to drive to work in the burbs with the schedule I keep. One of the reasons I'd like to be working in DT Mpls instead.

But I will be working from home tomorrow, which saves 20% for the week at least.

Love fudge.....yummy.

Next year, I hope, when we live in the city? Next year I'll be working from home or walking or biking. This year? Well, no way I could bike that far. let alone do it at 430 am. Oh, and no shower in the office anymore....

Maybe I'll get that Nike job I applied for, I bet they have showers.

Biking to work is possible, though I wouldn't feel very safe doing so. On my route to work there are no dedicated bike lanes and a stretch of highway that I'd prefer not to ride on... Also, with it being 95+ degrees, I'm sure my co-workers appreciate me not coming in drenched in sweat :)

Oh, right. Forgot where you lived for a minute. Yeah, not sure I'd do that, either.

If you do change jobs to Nike, and they give you some sort of deal on shoes, I would like to work out a deal with you Mike.

I'm told the employee discount store is amazing. Drove past the campus yesterday, they have a huge private wooded park for their employees to walk and run and bike in.

Happy Monday! Hope everyone enjoyed their Father's Day Weekend! I'm trying to waste some time at the airport before I fly back to Austin.

Today is National Vanilla Milkshake Day! To me, that's a little bland, but every once in a while it hits the spot! If I'm getting a milkshake, it's going to be strawberry, or mint chocolate chip.

Today is also National Ice Cream Soda Day! Just in case you missed out on Root Beer Float Day a few days ago, you can redeem yourself! Why limit yourself to just root beer? Go crazy today with orange soda!

Today is also National American Eagle Day! No, not the store that pre-teens shop at. This is a day to celebrate the bald eagle, and how awesome it is. If I was posting from a laptop, I'd try to find a video of a bald eagle.

Btw ... a black cow and a rootbeer float aren't always the same thing ... they can be when it's strictly vanilla ice cream and root beer, but a black cow can also be made with cola, or with chocolate ice cream. It also is a regional thing. I guess. Yes, I looked up the difference and never reported back.

Vanilla Milkshake Day? Hmm ... I typically make or get something a little different than that, but good old fashioned vanilla every once in a while does hit the spot, as you said.

It's also World Refugee Day, whatever you want to do with that info. My 'go to' organizations to give donations in this realm are UNHCR, Doctors Without Borders and UNICEF. I typically have a different schedule so won't be donating today, but well, it's World Refugee Day. (As least I received one email today asking for money based on this.)

We may all be refugees by the end of the year.

I'm getting this up early, because omg, I'm drooling already! Tomorrow is Chocolate Eclair Day! And ... and ... Onion Ring Day!!

Discuss. Or eat, then discuss. Oh heck ,,, eat!

So the past two days have been partially occupied by corporate 'embrace the cult' courses. An excellent reminder of what I dislike about corporate America (or most other places, to be sure).

Make some more good eating suggestions to ease my pain. :)

Um ... onion rings and chocolate eclairs?

I'm pretty particular when it comes to onions, I don't like them in a lot of things some people insist they be in, salad for instance.

They do belong in a ring of batter and deep fried however, not particular about that.

Eclairs are pretty good, although it's hard to find a really good one.

I'm with you North. Onions are very hit and miss on food items. Onions on salad? No thanks. Grilled onions I can handle. Raw red onions - not a chance.

I'm seeing a trend here with onions ... not raw. And I concur.

Raw onions in salads are acceptable, I trust.

The bloomin' onion is basically an onion ring, made of the entire onion, and then sliced open like a flower bloom.

Happy Friday!

Today is National Take Your Dog to Work Day! I wish there could be a dog in the office everyday... Is there any better stress reliever than seeing a bunch of puppies running around?

Today is also International Fairy Day! I've learned recently that it's becoming pretty expensive for the tooth fairy these days.. One of my co-workers who has 2 kids ages 9 and 11 told me the going rate for a tooth is $5-10 a pop. Some people pay even more! She was blown away when her 9 year old came back saying the tooth fairy gave one of his buddies $20 for a tooth. That's insane!

Finally, today is National Pralines Day! I don't believe I've had these before, but the pictures look good!
