Food and other such holidays

I hope we have pie today. Both sons are home from college (still in MN, still in our house.....sigh)....but the one that doesn't really eat pie is having his wisdom teeth pulled today. that might be throwing off our dinner plans, no idea.

Plus, we just are finding we don't like sweets as much as we used to......

Potato Chips are my kryptonite, although I have cut back a little it's rare to not be eating potato chips when watching a sporting event, and I watch a lot of sporting events.

My standard go to has always been the good old fashioned Old Dutch Rip-L chip, no dip thanks.

Also a fan of

Kettle Salt and Pepper

Miss Vicki's Jalepeno

Miss Vicki's Sea salt and Vinegar

Old Dutch Creamy Dill

Ruffles Sour Cream and Onion

Kettle New York Cheddar

Hickory Sticks

Ruffles All Dressed

Too big a list.

Best potato chip I have ever had was at KC's saloon in Pillager. If you ever take the 210 through thath part of the state, do yourself a favor and stop in for the German nachos on their home made potato chips. Sooo good.

But ... I thought I was on Twins Daily! Apparently not, though; unfortunately, I find myself in the unusual position of having to resume my search for the website I waste the most time on ... I'll get back to you when I find it ...

It's also National Everything You Think is Wrong Day! Or for us on TD. today is Tuesday....

Well, everything is wrong today for me ... I still can't see. Next time I'm going to tell them ... only ONE diluting drop in each eye, please. But it is much better.

We follow up from National Everything You Think is Wrong Day to....

National Everything You Do is Right Day! So feel good about everything today, it's all going to go smoothly. Mike if there's people looking at your house today, maybe they'll make an offer on the spot so you can head out to the west coast!

Today is also National Artichoke Heart Day! I do enjoy a good spinach and artichoke dip, and have tried roasting artichokes before as a side dish for dinner. Any other ways that you know of how to prepare them?

I really like artichokes, but I just feel they are a hassle not worth dealing with on my own. There are very few foods that make me feel that way.

Let's hope they come today, we had to turn down 3 showings yesterday, since my son was home recovering from having his wisdom teeth pulled.

I doubt people at work are going to feel I did everything right today. I've already sent 3 emails telling people they are wrong......

I love corned beef and cabbage, and there are many places in Chicago to get it. However, those places will be packed to the gills, and I have to work tonight, so corned beef and cabbage will have to wait. And Irish coffee will have to wait, too. Green beer? Haven't done that since college. You do the math.

Thankfully the St. Patrick's Day parade in Chicago happened over last weekend, while I was gone. The one event I truly dread. You can't go anywhere in the city and not be overrun with drunken, vomiting, passed out people ... and this is at 11am. Well, that and the Blackhawks Stanley Cup parade and celebration. But I think we'll miss that this year.

Today is National Quilting Day! Quilting has a special claim upon my affections since my mom has made many beautiful quilts in her lifetime. It is a time honored craft which reflects a deep and vital part of the American folk art tradition; when people think of the history of our country dating before a certain period in time when early feminism came into play, it is often the work of men they picture because much of the hard work of women has not survived the passage of time – for instance, the accomplishments of cooking and cleaning were necessities which disappeared with each passing day, whereas buildings and such have survived the centuries. However, quilts remain a surviving example of female achievement; like every other art form, the vast majority of these have long since faded into oblivion, but there remain some stunning examples of their work to this day. Each surviving relic serves as a reminder of the hard work of American women. Not only do we now know that women can do everything men can, but we have opened doors for men as well, providing them with the opportunity to quilt and do other things formerly considered women’s work right alongside us. Today, we can look at each piece with a newfound appreciation for the individuality which reflects the people who have made them and remember the pivotal role women have played in the making of a great country.

Quilting is a lost art that's for sure. My grandmother was great at it, and I still have one of her blue blankets she made for me when I was born. It may be falling apart on some seams, but I can't get myself to throw it away. Especially now that she passed.

Today is National French Bread Day! Bread is my guilty pleasure... Especially when it's warm and the butter melts right on the bread...

Today is also National Common Courtesy Day! So say your please and thank you to anyone that responds to your messages on TD.

Today is also National California Strawberry Day! Are strawberries back to tasting good in the grocery stores? I'm a little hesitant to give them a try after the last batch I bought....

Today is also National Single Parent Day! Single parents are modern day heroes with all that they do.

Oh, great ... now I'm going to have to go to the store looking for some fresh, warm French crusty bread, thank you very much.

Strawberries? Eh, whatever. Not a big strawberry eater.

Indeed, inorganic berries taste a lot like rocks. :)

You're not that far off from the last container of strawberries I bought over a month ago. The color looked right, but there wasn't a hint of sweetness to them. They also got mushy within 2 days of being in the fridge. Very disappointing.

Is there such a thing as a California Strawberry?

Of course! Strawberries love the warm temperatures where they can shred on skateboards, surf boards, and even partake in skiing!

Riiight. Just like the California Raisins are special for their impromptu Christmas caroling traits...

I won't get into the long argument of it, but I pretty much won't buy organic, especially not in the U.S., where "organic" farmers can use more chemicals than my own father uses on his farm, yet he won't ever qualify as organic. Organic farming has also terribly abused farm land in this country due to poor farming and agricultural practices. Needless to say, I don't want to support the industry whatsoever, especially when I'm blessed with the ability to get most of my goods right here locally anyway, knowing right where they come from.

Yeah, knowing where your food comes from is far more important than that green "certified organic" sticker. While my family mostly eats organic food, I'm not pleased with the overall quality (and I would know, being the head chef in this house). Take, for example, the apples from the local, non-organic orchard versus the organic apples brought in from California. I won't eat the latter - they have, in fact, basically ruined my opinion of apples in general.

Queso is yummy. Dollar for greasy dollar, its hard to beat the old fashioned onion dip powder that you mix into tub of sour cream, paired with regular salty potato chips. I made meals out of that combo as a kid.
