Article: Official Twins Daily July Trade Deadline Thread

Broxton to the Cardinals.

For a 20 yr old posting a .700 OPS in his third yr in rookie ball, without a position.

Too steep a price for TR?

I thought this said "Buxton to the Cardinals." It caused me to spit out a little bit of the soda I was drinking and do a double take.

Broxton's ERA this year is 5.89!

Don't the Cardinals have a statistics department, how did they not see that?

*bad sarcasm

Rosario or Hicks absolutely should NOT be traded in order to dump Nolasco. The Twins have plenty of payroll flexibility and while it sucks having Nolasco's money on the books the Twins can easily just eat it instead of giving up a stud OF like Hicks or Rosario.

preach it brother......

I particularly like being reminded that Washington had the ****'s to tell Bill Smith "Capps for Ramos? No deal. Not enough. You're going to need to add a minor leaguer to that, my friend. "

And Smith said, "OK."

Smith -"we'll give you Ramos for Capps."

George Washington (or whoever their GM was) - "you mean proven closer Matt Capps? I dunno..."

Arcia is out of options after this year....Kepler has them. Again, that has huge value. I don't get this talk at all.

I don't know if Thrylos compared Kepler and Arcia's relative current value so much as pointing out that including him in the conversations with the Buxtons and Sanos as an untouchable may be a bit over-the-top.  Kepler's had a huge year.  Is it repeatable moving up the class ladder?

Perhaps the most apt comparison for this thread between Arcia and Kepler would be thus:  What could we have gotten for Arcia 2 years ago.  What about now?  I don't want Kepler to go back and be average and have missed on Lucroy or Kimbrel or an impact guy because we over-valued our hand.

for Lucroy, I'm all in. Kepler and another prospect or two, sure. For a RP, I'm less excited.....but willing to listen.

but he compared Kepler's CEILING to a stiff.

And, Arcia is out of options. He's either here, or gone, next year.

If Ryan is going to do something major I think it's going to involve Plouffe. Given his track record of trading AJ when Mauer was ready to assume the catching role and trading Dougie when Morneau was ready to assume 1b leads me to believe that he would follow a similar pattern. Maybe the timing wouldn't be right though with Plouffe and his wife just having a baby (do GM's consider this type of thing?).

That $9m option for next year is mighty high for a pitcher like Broxton.  Decline it and he's a rental.

I would imagine that would be an offseason move. The AJ trade was an offseason move.

This is only a fair criticism if the deadline passes and Ryan hasn't found someone better or equal to Broxton. It's not like the guy was stolen away from the Brewers. He's a decent, not great, arm.

He's probably a bit better than "Decent," but I won't quibble.

But he was basically a salary dump.  And I'd take him above Boyer, for sure, for the last two months of the season.

Oh look, another good RP traded, Lowe to the Blue Jays for nothing of note! Twins should have been all over that one, they wouldn't have even had to spend the Pohlad's money on a plane ticket!

As would I and I think the Broxton pickup was a good one by the Cards.

But I'll wait for 3:30pm to come around before I declare it a failure on Ryan's part to miss out on Broxton.

(but IMO, there's a decent chance 3:30 comes around and we all groan and roll our eyes)

Lowe flew under my radar-but then it's not my job to track Seattle Mariners relief pitchers. He would have been a great add.

After reading up on the mess that is the San Diego Padres, I highly doubt the Twins involve themselves with anything Padres-related, they are requiring a massive salary dump in any deal for a reliever, and I can't blame Ryan for not answering any calls from the San Diego area code.

Good day y'all and let's get a win tonight; see you in game thread I hope.

At this point I think I'll be happy if the Twins just promote another guy from AAA and have that overdue heart to heart talk with Mike Pelfrey.

Lots of things could go down in the next couple of hours. See what the Twins do, would not be happy if nothing happens, but that could be the case.

Twins have 2 negatives going.

1. No GM wants to be looked at as being fleeced by TR(and several have)

2. Twins are regarded as having a great farm system, so other GMs expect more or the same number prospect as from a weaker organization.

Twins may have over played their hand and overvalued their prospects.
