Transaction: DeVries & Hendriks

Recommended Posts

Yes, the 10-day rule did not apply to the 26th man needed for a doubeheader. The option of sending DeVries downs works because he would've just sat around on the bench here. When he starts, we have t see. There is also a big difference, right now, between the two pitchers. DeVries is working his tail off in every start to succeed and try to stay here and prove the pundits wrong that he is nothing more than an end-of-the-bench bullpen guy. Liam has all the talent in the world, but doesn't seem to know that you have to labor a bit and adapt, especially when going thru the lineup, and working with "professional" umpires. I applaud DeVries. Like Diamond, he is attempting to make the most of the opportunity given him. If he stays in the majors, we will see one of abseball's ahrdest working pitchers the next three seasons.

Hendriks has to stop being afraid of letting the ball get hit - I noticed last night when he faced the front part of the lineup, especially the 2nd & 3rd time through, he was afraid to put it into the strike zone. Problem is, if you throw it where the batter can't reach it, it's a ball. In AAA maybe the batters will chase those pitches, but not in MLB.

He is still young and has decent upside. He'll never be the starter on opening day, but he can develop into a back-of-the-rotation guy.

Do you seriously believe that? That he may not know he has to try hard and adapt? If yes...wow. If no...I apologize for missing the sarcasm or whatever it was.

I'm not too worried about Hendriks (but I never had a terribly high opinion of him in the first place). He's pitching scared and trying to Greg Maddux the plate instead of throwing strikes. That works if you're Greg Maddux. Not so much if you're Liam Hendriks, rookie pitcher.

He's still only 23. There's nothing wrong with giving him more time in AAA to sort himself out.

On his KFAN show this morning, PA hinted this was in the works, immediately after his talk with Rick Anderson.

If this is what it seems on its surface, then I'm a little worked up about it. I saw gradual improvement from Hendriks, which is what made his fifth inning last night so disappointing - it looked like he turned the corner up until then. He's also been the victim a few times of staying in an inning too long and defense that wasn't quite good enough. Plus, Hendriks is 5 times the prospect DeVries is and a much better bet to be an asset this year. And what exactly does he have left to prove in AAA?

The only think I can figure is that something happened behind the scenes to make the organization think that either Hendriks wasn't ready or needed a kick to the butt or to regain some confidence. Maybe something after he was pulled just short of getting his first win. I have no insided information that is the case, but I don't understand this move otherwise.

I wonder if this had more to do with Cole De Vries earning a shot than it did Liam Hendriks failing to produce. I think we see Hendriks right back up here if Blackburn continues to pitch batting practice (which I think he will). As you said, it also could have something to do with not wanting Hendriks to start getting frustrated at not finding his first MLB win. Put him back down in AAA and let him build up some confidence in his stuff again.

Here is why this is fair and makes sense:

- each of these guys make 4 times as much when they are in the bigs vs when they are in AAA

- Cole De Vries has been pitching better than Liam Hendriks with the Twins

he deserves to make more money than Liam Hendriks

Glad that the Twins are doing the right thing here...

Hendriks has been very bad. Not just bad but lacking confidence and looking spooked.

I get that he's a better prospect than De Vries, but to me it really doesn't matter which one is up and which one is down. Go with the hot hand.

He had 3 good innings yesterday - 1,2,4. The 3rd inning, though, was the same as the 5th - throwing scared to the top of the order. He managed to get out of it with only a run scored in the 3rd, but it was still ugly to watch. The 5th it finally bit him. He was not going to win the game - he was on the verge of losing it, and I'm glad they pulled him when they did.

I think this may be a case of trying to bridge the gap between Triple-A and MLB. You're right, he has nothing left to prove in Triple-A. At the same time, he has shown that he is not quite ready for MLB. I guess the question is where best to continue to prepare or improve. In MLB, like Dozier, or in Rochester, where there isn't quite so much scrutiny and he can concentrate more on pitch location. From what I hear he is an intelligent young man and understands the theory and art of pitching (mixing up his pitches, setting up batters, finding their weak spots, etc). He just may need a touch more work on the mechanics.

Well, good thing we're all being consistent here. Thought we sucked and it didn't matter? Let 'em work it out? No?

I don't like it. Hendriks is a much, much better pitcher than De Vries. Granted, you wouldn't know it by their latest respective starts, but I don't think there's much to be gained here. Hendriks has shown his mastery of Triple-A hitters, why not just let him take some lumps and hopefully try to turn things around?

I presume there's something specific he's being sent down to work on, as John hinted.

I'm also not a fan of this move at all. Hendriks has nothing to do in AAA unless it is something specific as said above. Still, I don't like it. I don't mind De Vries coming back up, I have a problem with Blackburn continuing to get starts. How many more does he need to have before the Twins pull the plug?

I agree with nick and John...I am suprised, Hendriks has better stuff he just has to trust it, but like you said maybe it's something specific.

Yes! keep Liam instead of Blackie! Hope P.J returns soon cuz we're running out of options...sounds like Pavario took a step back too.

I would have liked another start or two from Hendriks before sending him back down. His three starts before Monday were OK, perhaps something he could have built on.

Looking ahead, perhaps they wanted to protect him from facing the Texas lineup while getting a couple of starts in AAA with a plan to call him back up soon after the all star break. Or maybe he was going down anyways with Walters coming back.
