Article: Game Thread: Twins v Mariners, 7/30 @ 7:10pm CT

Recommended Posts

No indication from the Mariners broadcasters that Perkins has been anything but untouchable this season.

And then the leadoff walk catches them by surprise. "We'll take it." Yo, dudes, teams have been successful since the all star break.

DP does reduce the pain for us, of course.

We'll have to agree to disagree about what went on there.

Wait, so there wasn't a guy on 2B with two outs?  Walking Hicks didn't set up a force out at every base? And Mauer didn't make them pay?  That is exactly what happened?

That is a strategy a lot of smart teams do. It's a smart thing to do regardless of the hitter. I see it all the time when I'm not watching the Twins. I understand we don't that often, kind of like how our pitchers, forever, don't throw stuff in the dirt on extreme pitchers count cause goodness forbid we throw a ball.

LHP vs LHB, you play the percentages!!!11111!!!!1!!!1!1!!1!1!!!1!!!one!!

If I'm the manager... I don't like the percentages of an extra base runner with Joe up... If Joe is the 23 million dollar Joe.

Walking him suggests to me... and I think Chief as well... That Joe ain't 23 million dollar Joe Anymore and an opposing manager just said it with this decision.

I get the lefty on lefty bit and I get the force at every base. You are down 4 runs... I'm not putting an extra runner on base to get to the 3 hitter. The Percentage are an out 7 times out of 10.

I think the move speaks volumes and I love Joe... Always have...

I think that they were afraid of Hicks and less afraid of Mauer.  Plus Hicks was ahead in the count.

I think we saw Seattle use a strategy that many teams do.  I can see how people who like to dog Mauer could see it otherwise but watch enough baseball, it's smart strategy to set up a force at every base. It happens a lot even when there are two outs.

But whatever.

In other news, MLB Network is talking about how crazy it is that there is NO Twins talk at the deadline.

Mauer has been IBB 10 times this season in only 100 games. Only 5 batters in baseball have more and only 2 others have 10.

What does that tell you about what managers think?

Cuz... It is Crazy... It's a key moment. If the Blue Jays race past the Twins. I personally won't say it was because of the moves or lack of moves. I've seen enough teams tank after big acquisitions.

But if the Jays race past us... there will be a million people pointing fingers at Terry Ryan and this particular moment in time.

What does that tell you about what managers think?

1. McClendon is crazy or McClendon has based decisons based on recent performance.

2. Plouffe doesn't scare anybody.

3. Mauer gets lots of PA's

4. Managers remember Joe of Old.

5. 10 and 100 are nice equal numbers so Joe's universe is completely in sync.

It never happens with two outs.  Never.

Teams walk a batter with two outs because they'd rather face the next guy.

yes it does.  You need to watch more baseball besides the Twins and pay attention to defensive strategy.

June 1st the Twins were: 30-19

June 1st the Jays were: 23-29

Since then:

Twins are 23-29

Jays are 28-22

They have been 6 games better than the Twins in 2 months and Price hasn't even suited up yet.  I hope a million people just assume it's the only reason if they pass the Twins.

The Mariners are also by far the biggest underachievers in the MLB this year and have a manager who isn't super highly regarded, I wouldn't read too much into it as he will be fired shortly anyways.

I can't argue with that. I wouldn't have walked Hicks to get to Joe in the 7th inning down 4... not in a milion years.. But... If McClendon does that to get to Mike Trout. Then I know he's really crazy and not just disrespecting Joe.

I do agree with chief on this one. It wasn't a intentional walk situation. There were two out and they were losing by a fistful of runs, and as Glunn said, Hicks worked the count in his favor. So they walked him to pitch to Mauer who has been struggling in RBI situations.
