Hamels to Rangers for 5 prospects

Seems like a really great deal for the Phillies and a good deal for the Rangers.

Phillies had no use for him as they are a complete dumpster fire and need all the help they can get, by my count they got 3 really good prospects and Harrison who slots into the rotation immediately.

The Rangers make a great move for 2016 on, Yu+Hamels makes a pretty freaking good 1-2 combo.

Rangers made out very well, but this is better than the Phillies were expected to do as well. Lots of volatility in the guys they got, even with Harrison, whose back may never let him be a full-time starter again, but this is what you have to do when Amaro has drug his feet for so long. Crazy that the Rangers pulled off Hamels and didn't have to include Gallo or Mazara.

Right, this package is bigger last year, or last off season, imo.

It's also why Perkins should be dealt, imo.

Harrison is as valuable as Nolasco. And further evidence that teams are willing to take back a bad contract for a high priced player.

Harrison had better results than Nolasco, pre-injury (although that was a long time ago). He is also younger and left-handed. I could see the argument that teams would be more interested in him, or former star Jose Reyes, than in Nolasco.

He had two good years with a sub 6 K/9 (he was lucky).  In the last 3 years he has pitched 34 innings with 27 K's and 25 BB's.  There is no way that he has any value to any team.  He was 100% a salary dump.

Reyes was also a salary dump but he has value (unlike Harrison) but not as much as his contract.

I find it interesting how future contracts seem to really be dragging down player values this deadline. Hamels is owed a lot but he's an elite pitcher. Tulo is owed a lot but he's still an elite shortstop.

In the case of Hamels, I wanted nothing to do with that contract but in the case of Tulo, I think the Twins missed out by not snatching up a position of need.
