The $888/hour man

Recommended Posts

Now that Cole DeVries has been sent back down, after one day (and a fine performance on the mound), we can assess just what it was worth, at least to DeVries - not quite $900/hour for the time he spent pitching yesterday.

I assume he's getting the major league minimum ($480,000/year), and it is prorated over his time actually spent on the roster (1 day out of roughly 180 in the season). That comes out to his latest stint in the majors earning him roughly $2,666. Figure the average game time is about 3 hours, that comes out to roughly $888/hour (yes, I know there is preparation and practice time involved, but I'm ignoring that - they don't get paid for spring training either).

As my father used to say, "Nice gig if you can get it!"

He was on the roster for 2 games and I assume would be paid 1/81st of his salary. He's not penalized for being a starting pitcher. His presence helped the team in both games. The 26 man roster for double headers might have some special rules, but I'm not so sure a single player is assigned as the 26th man making it impossible to treat anyone differently then any other guy who doesn't have a major league contract.
