I disagree. The issue has been simple being able to execute the headfirst slide properly. One of the biggest issues has been little practice in improving that. Here's a 2003 article from Don Zimmer discussing how teams have de-emphasized sliding in general:

I look at guys like Brian Dozier who use the headfirst slide to his advantage. The headfirst slider allows for a little more finesse than the feetfirst model. Look at his execution here and compare it to guys like Adam Eaton (on the lower part of the post) or Buxton's slide here:

Obviously fingers still have exposure but Dozier now wears a hand guard to protect those.

In that same NY Times article with Zimmer, they mentioned that the Mets fined their minor leaguers $100 each time they performed the headfirst slide. I guess that is one way to eliminate it but, to me, there are advantages to teaching the proper techniques. I certainly don't want guys like Kent Hrbek sliding headfirst but otherwise, it's fine, IMO.

Kent had that nice soft belly to land on first. :)

Buried in today's StarTribune article by LaVelle on Buxton:  "The Twins conducted tests and found a slight tear in the ligament."  Buxton's time out has been extended to 4-6 weeks.

Also:

"(Terry) Ryan had one problem. Buxton didn’t get treatment on the thumb before Wednesday’s game.

“That’s the one thing I disagree with or am disappointed in,” he said."

Not a smart thing on Buxton's part.  A guy with his history of injuries should know better.  And so should the Twins training staff.

If B-B-B-B-Buston doesn't mention it to the trainers, what do you expect them to do?

Sounds very much like a sour grapes comment.  There is no way any trainer would have detected a ligament tear, he probably prescribes two pills, some ice, and some useless advice.  I believe that Buxton will (already has?) replace Mauer as the Twins "baby Jesus"--and Buxton will be benched every time he has an owwie.

Because you started with 1 cent, and doubled down on it?

:)

If you keep doubling it every day in a little more than a month you could buy out the remainder of Mauer's contract.
