You guys are getting a little too "Merge" Happy

To get back to the original point of this thread ..... which has been completely derailed somehow.....if you do not read every thread every day and you come back and there are these mergers, it becomes more daunting.

I would have read about Alex Meyer being called up.  I did not want to read about Tonkin being sent down or about who MIGHT be called up.

BTW, for the most part I don't care about the "article" threads that are just rehashing what has generally been hashed and rehashed.  They seldom present new information only a confirmation of the "news".  (That is wholly different from the articles like Parker's who give good analysis.  And others, too, but wholly new content is significantly different than mostly regurgitating the Twins' press release.)

Well said.  Why shouldn't we do the opposite?  Link the article straight into the pre-existing discussion and just slightly rename it?

This was a case of merging two threads that weren't even about the same thing.

I do agree that the Tonkin thread could have been closed right away, and a new thread created. I also agree that after we've discussed something for a day or two, and then there is an article.....that divides the conversation.

OTOH, I hate it when there are 4-5 threads on the same thing (like the draft part ran into some.....).....

It's always a judgment call and peoples judgment always differs. There is no perfect scenario and that's just the way it goes sometimes, we'll do our best to do what we feel is an appropriate measure at any given time.

The linked article is a good suggestion, especially if it's just rehashing a press release.

I'll say I'm a little shocked at the outrage over something that happens very infrequently around here, and when it does it's usually a pretty obvious call. This one was a bit tricky but ultimately something had to be done about the same topic being discussed in 3 or 4 different threads.

It's because of the off-day. My dogs do the same thing if they miss a walk. At least most of these folks won't pee on your leg.

You can blame gunnathor for that :)  I was merging all of those and then he started one b/c the others were too long.  I let it go.

On that note, we usually merge things to try to keep them tidy.  No sense carrying on the same discussion in multiple threads.  I don't see what the big deal is here.  It's not like the DTFC days where I swear they were paying hosting fees by the thread.

Ok, how about hue and cry? Is that closer?

Brouhaha: an episode involving excitement, confusion, turmoil, etc., especially a broil over a minor or ridiculous cause: A brouhaha by the baseball players resulted in three black eyes.

My $0.02 on the situation would be this - it seems to be unevenly executed across forums.

I created an offseason thread with the initial post discussing how it could be a spot to evaluate moves and hot stove intrigue. That worked for about 3 days, and then fourteen new threads about rumored moves were started, each one left standing.

I don't frequent the Twins forum as often as most here because I find my way here as a member of the community who is here more for the community members than the Twins specifically, so I get that I'm rather an "odd ball" on this forum, but when I want to discuss Minnesota Gopher football with the handful of people here who I know enjoy discussing such, I get private messages encouraging the discussion on another site, which for me really defeats the purpose of my being here.  I have LOVED the recent political discussions as they add a better spread discussion on the site, and it's okay to allow for more than baseball discussion to happen in a message forum setting, even if that said forum is titled and primarily focused on baseball.

Okay, that was more like three cents, but you get my drift...

A few thoughts:

1. This was an unusual situation. Most of the time, a merged/locked thread only has 1-2 pages of content before the article is up and it's merged/locked. This is an outlier situation and while it would have been okay to keep the six page thread open, it's also a situation that occurs once in a blue moon.

2. I appreciate all the merging/locking the mods do and they do it because ownership requests that it be done. In the case of the Buxton call-up, I think we had 4-5 threads that were basically discussing the same topic. Does it create a few minutes of confusion while the threads are merged? Sure... But that's better than half the page being consumed by people discussing the same topic, saying the same things. Who here hasn't gotten confused about what conversation they were having in the "Buxton is called up!" thread... Or was it the "Buxton gets the call!" thread? I can't remember.

3. Yes, the implementation is inconsistent. Twins Daily generates over 100 new threads a week, probably more like 150 per week during the season. Moderators aren't going to have 100% coverage of every thread generated on the board, particularly the MiLB, Draft, and Other Baseball forums. If you see duplicate threads, don't hesitate to reach out to a moderator or myself and we'll make a judgment call on those threads.

4. In the case of articles, this software does not have the ability to merge an article thread into an already-existing thread. That's why we lock the established thread and try to move people to the article thread. If we merge an article thread into another thread, it breaks the article commenting system (it's a complex technical issue with how threads are generated and linked to the front page or I would have changed it already).

5. Criticism is fine but for Christ's sake, ease up on the mods. They do all that they do out of love for the community. They get virtually nothing for all the work they do on Twins Daily. If you have a complaint, leave the moderators out of it and direct your burning hatred in my direction. It's probably my fault anyway.

We get nothing??

What was all that talk about stock options?

He said "virtually nothing " Chief. Which would by definition indicate we almost get nothing, which by extension would mean we therefore get something.

I wonder what that is?

Satisfaction of a job well done.

What did I do to deserve that? (Wait, ChiTown, don't answer that!)

You aren't a horror and I would never even hint that you were even close to that. Mildly annoying at times is a different story.

Well, geez, next time include airfare!

Indeed. It's not our fault that all those clowns put the TC metro area so far away from everything. I literally moved across the continent to the Boston area and they *still* are way out of town.
