You guys are getting a little too "Merge" Happy

Not sure why the "Alex Meyer called up" thread was merged with a 6 page thread about Tonkin being sent down, not sure people need to read through the first 5 pages of debate in order to comment/talk about Meyer being called up.

I get wanting to keep a "clean" forum, but this is overkill, it's not like there were 8 threads about Meyer being called up.

Dave ... if you read through that entire thread it was who will be called up in his place? Not about Tonkin per se, and many there were calling for Meyer to be called up ... and then news of Meyer was already announced on that thread and there was an ensuing discussion going, then you ... without looking ... start another thread. Besides ... once the 'official' article comes out, it gets locked anyway to continue the discussion there. That isn't my 'rule' btw, that's just how it is ... but we really don't need 3 or 4 different threads on the same topic.

Also, that Tonkin/Meyer thread is now locked and won't let me respond. Bummer.

See above ... when we get an 'official' article that comes out by one of the writers ... everything continues in the article thread. We used to be able to merge the two but now can't. It's not a perfect system, and one I don't particularly like because, well ... I don't ... but the idea is to not have 3 or 4 different threads going on the same thing.

Wait, so before I start a new thread I am supposed to go read through a thread that is already 6 pages long because apparently someone announced him being called up in that thread?

huh?

I don't get "locking" two threads just to restart the whole conversation over into some sort of "official article"  thread that was never originally posted to the forum page to begin with.

I get not wanting to have too many threads on a topic, but come on, this was just micromanaging.

The title of the thread was changed to reflect the call up ... 'Who will it be? It's Meyer!' I think was there. No need to go through 6 pages ... but you will be merged if you start a discussion that is happening elsewhere. It's how it goes. There is no need to have 3-4 different threads with the same discussion. I know you like to start threads right and left, and that's fine ... but this topic was already being discussed so it was merged. Simple. But it doesn't really matter because as soon as an 'official' article comes out, we are instructed to close the non-article thread to continue the discussion in the article thread. That isn't something I particularly like, but it's how this system works.

If we had a system where conversation could more easily be merged, I'd love it. But this is how it goes. Again ... then we should have 3-4 different threads on the same topic? REally? What's the answer here? Let the 3-4 threads on the same thing just go off with people having to repeat posts? We have a lot of that as it is when threads overlap, but there were two disccusions on Meyer coming up going on ... merged. End of story. When the article comes up ... that becomes the main thread for discussion and the other gets locked. I don't like it, but that's how it is.

Why change the title of the threads?

Lots of reasons ... one, to more accurately reflect what a thread is about; two, to correct misspellings (i.e. Brunanski ... but I left that one on purpose because I'm a brat); three, no clickbait; four, after a thread is in a few pages, it might change direction, or the news of the day changes it (ie 'Who will be called up?' changes to 'Who will be called up? It's him!'), so we want to help direct flow better. Sometimes we get requests to alter titles from the original poster for various reasons.

Everybody loves Dave. He's a fun guy and he makes people remember that it's important to think before they act - especially people in positions of authority. That's really good since you don't want people who have positions of authority over TD to get out of control like the people who have positions of authority over this country have.

He loves to start new topics on TD, and that's great because what would we talk about without topics to talk in? I'll admit he is accused at times of being a bit trigger-friendly when it comes to this, but we're a friendly group and put up with him because in fact he's better than a lot of people - otherwise he wouldn't have survived TD as well as he has. (What, was it 5 times obvious aliases of his have been blocked when I looked up the keyword "Vodka" under the TD "People" page? That shows just how patient he is with moderators' shenanigans.)

I have but one complaint about Dave. He has a tendency to be overly critical of high up people on TD - people who I respect and don't want to see being criticized for their hard and sacrificial work. I hope that if he realized that he's just making their hard work harder he would stop ... or at least slow down a bit.

The following quote comes to mind:

"Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them, and you have their shoes."

Dave, my advice is this: next time you feel the urge to criticize ChiTown or Brock, put on their shoes and walk a mile. That's right, a mile. I'm not sure since I didn't look on the map, but I think that takes you all the way to Grindr. Then stop there and think a while about how you're going to behave when you get back to TD.

My advice to ChiTown is this: merge this thread with the "Over Moderation" thread. We don't need two threads going at once that are basically all about criticizing you.

Sweet, but underneath it all, Dave loves us. He really does. Can't judge a book by its cover and Dave is a pretty smart guy. Things don't change if you don't squeak about them. And I don't mind people bringing issues up in this forum ... whether it's to like something, suggest something, trash something, or whatever. I'd rather these discussions take place here, where everyone can see them and comment, than disrupt the baseball forums with non-baseball stuff. Some people sometimes go a bit over the top when they are trying to make a point. Just gotta take it all in stride. :)

I gotta think Vodka Dave cares a lot about the Twins and this community. If he didn't, these topics wouldn't be brought up, he'd just leave. I think this is a better place with his high standards than without. I value his opinions, and frequently share them, even if I don't bring them up myself. As with many topics, this is a better community with a variety of viewpoints, and would argue that merging threads is a growing issue that can carry a fine line between just right and too much.

Fwiw I have known Brock, Nick, OLTF for something like 8 years now, and have met the first two for plenty of beers (OLTF always seems to rebuff my invites for drinks for some reason) I fully respect what they have done and will continue to do. They know that I harbor no real ill will or anything like that. You on the other hand seem to have some bizzarre issue with me and have followed me in various threads now to "defend" Brock and Co against the horrors that is myself.

As far as walking a mile in their shoes, I have. I have bought and later sold an Internet site in the past That had 600k and then built to 1.75 million monthly users and have often had many of the same issues, especially in terms of advertisers, user complaints, annoying ads, content etc so any criticizim or advice comes from love and wanting to see these guys make a kick ass site that they can all make a little bit of money on someday.

Rebuffed your invites??? When did I get invites? Lol! No way I'm gonna rebuff that now next time you are in Chicago or I'm in New York!

Honestly, I don't see this as a problem, but I did think the merging today was odd.  Really caught me off guard.  We merged a "react to the decision" thread with a previous thread more about speculation pertaining to that decision.

So, it did seem a bit odd.

It's been done that way before. And Dave's thread was only 18 posts in and I knew there'd be an article thread up before too long anyway, so it was just easier to consolidate from the get go.

Right, but typically doesn't the merge happen with the article thread so that the topic is the same?  (Reaction)

Anyway, I don't care that much, but I also was surprised by the timing of the merge.  Though I'm sure Dave is just trolling.

We can't merge threads into article threads or vice versa, which is why things get locked and redirected. We've merged a ton of threads ... you just don't always see it because you aren't right there when it happens. I can see how it's a bit ... disconcerting ... if you are posting and all of a sudden the thread becomes something else, but honestly, we do it quite a lot, especially when 'big' news breaks and everyone rushes in to talk about it.

And as for this, the questions was 'Who is coming up?' I don't think it's a stretch to have that answer and continue with that answer in the same thread, especially considering that MANY of you were hoping it would be Meyer. To me that was a very logical segue and was indeed being discussed, so to me, it was a no brainier to merge them. Really, not a big deal. And, it's been done lots, you just never were right there for it.

First off, I do not have a problem with you. I'm pretty sure that in my previous post I made it more than clear that I believe you have a valid point, but as people seem to be skimming over what ChiTown has said (thereby forcing her to repeat herself over ... and over ... again), maybe you just missed that part. If it isn't there, it's here.

Also, I enjoy the threads you start. They make me laugh. And in truth, since you start a lot of threads in jest, I think you should expect to get some responses of the same spirit.

(OLTF always seems to rebuff my invites for drinks for some reason)

Hm ... maybe she just doesn't want to find out what a StonedVodkaDave is like. ;)
