KLAW on Berrios

Considering Law was probably Berrios' fiercest critic, that's pretty good news.

Nice to see Buxton 3 and Sano 10 after their slow starts.  I knew about Correa's fast start but hadn't really noticed Seager's start.

Berrios has to be one of the first MiLB promotions when the Twins feel the time is right to start shuffling players up and down the minor league system. He's embarrassing hitters in the Southern League.

Heard Rob Anthony on the radio over the weekend and his comment about promotions was something like 'we'd like to wait until the 1st half of the season is done so they can help earn playoff berths before we promote them.'

When does the half season end for Chattanooga?

so, the minor league playoffs are more important than the Twins' success? He couldn't really mean that, could he?

That's only for A-ball. In reality it's a numbers game, they don't actually care about the FSL playoffs.

That is definitely encouraging. Law is not one who is quick to change his evaluation, especially based purely on results. Makes me believe he's heard/seen enough to make a change.

Perhaps, Berrios' work ethic has convinced Law that his size is not as big a concern for holding up as a starter. And maybe his command and mix of pitches has lessened Law's concerns about getting plane on his fastball - or maybe he is getting more movement on that particular pitch. I'm interested to hear more about why Law now believes he's a top 25 prospect talent.

They are trying to preach a culture of winning through the entire organization. I never have a problem with a guy spending an extra 3-4 weeks at a level to help his team try to make the playoffs. This isn't new and the Twins certainly aren't the only team to do that. If they get to the playoffs, they get extra games. It's a good thing.

There is no rush to get JO Berrios from AA to AAA. If he's in Rochester on May 25 or June 25, is there a big developmental difference?

There should be no rush to get Chih-Wei Hu from Hi-A to AA.

There should be no rush to get Stephen Gonsalves from Lo-A to Hi-A.

It's not hurting their development to spend another 2-3 weeks at a level. For pitchers, that's like 3-4 more starts.

Now, if a guy is ready for the big league promotion, I'm all in favor of getting them there as needed. But, there should be no rush to get a guy to Ft. Myers.

I agree with promotions in the minors.......but if they had no CF, and Buxton was almost ready or ready, they can't mean they'd wait 3 more weeks to help his MiLB team at the expense of the MLB team, right?

I'm happy to hear this, though I'm still a bit puzzled by his ranking.  KLaw's criticism was always that he wasn't tall enough and his pitches' plane was too flat, but he always acknowledged the positive MiLB results.  What changed?

I don't like KLaw much, and I didn't agree with the weight he put on Berrios' height, but I respected the fact that he didn't change his opinion when his biggest objection was a factor that could not be changed.  Did Berrios gain an inch last time KLaw saw him pitche?

Seth, do players on minor league playoff teams get extra cash as well?  I know it wouldn't be like major league post season but just wondered if there was a financial reward.

I would agree with that. I don't think anyone thinks he's ready right now. I don't expect him to play in AAA, though some of that depends on Hicks and most of it depends on him.

Seth did a better job of answering this than I could of.

I looked up the Chattanooga schedule, June 23 is their All star game, I 'assume' that would also be the half way point. Another three weeks of winning together can't hurt, fostering that 'winning culture', confidence, teamwork, etc.  Baseball is as much mental as it is physical, that mental side of the game needs to be developed too.

It doesn't matter how the MLB team is going, I think it would take at least two outfield injuries for Buxton to be called up before Aug. 1, the Twins aren't going to rush him. The same with Sano, it would take injuries to Plouffe and Escobar to get him up before Aug. 1.

Height can be a detriment for some pitchers. The operative word here is "can". Doesn't mean it will. KLAW probably wanted to see Berrios have success against some higher level hitters in AA. Now that he has, he upped his ranking.

Actually, the Southern League, in which the AA Lookouts compete, also splits their season in to halves (the Eastern League, where former Twins AA affiliate New Britain competed, did not have split seasons).

Winners of 1st & 2nd half in each Division play one another in the first round of the playoffs.

Chattanooga's first half ends June 21.

That's an example. An example, to discuss if they would be more worried about minor league playoffs than the major league team.

The way they are playing currently, they could clinch it well before that date. Of course, then we'd hear something about them playing in the All Star Game (which I don't necessarily disagree with)

1.) I don't have a problem with the players staying for the All Star Game. It's a nice honor.

2.) Two years ago, Ft. Myers clinched the 1st half title with about a week to go before the All Star game. Sano and Rosario were promoted the next day and skipped the All Star game. I don't know if that's a team decision or a team/player decision.

I suspect if you asked just about any player if they'd rather stick around for the Double-A All Star Game, or play in the majors, they'd all choose majors. Not only is it, you know, the Majors, but it also represents a significantly larger paycheck.

Posing the same question on a jump to Triple-A, you might get different answers.
