Hu's spot start

Recommended Posts

Today's games are listed as a "day/night doubleheader"

I know most double-headers in the minors are 7 innings, but does the day/night aspect of this mean they are going to be 9 inning games?

yes, 2 , 9 inning games

Kevin Oklabzija (Rochester's Democrat and Chronicle) tweeted that he is hitting 94 with the fastball. Fun to listen to.

Wow.  Seth do you have the link handy to your prospect ranking write-up of Hu?  He keeps this up, he's going to convert a ton of believers by this afternoon.

I love to see them do things like this to rattle the cage a little. Then the natural mid-season move to the next level isn't such a drastic move. I would think the move to Chatty is coming soon for him, as long as they get the timing down for whoever else is going to be on the move (Duffey, Berrios? above, Gonsalves below).

Let me tell y'all I am one impressed fan of our Mr. Hu. This was a stellar performance. 2 hits and 1 ER in 6 innings. At AAA and he's only 21. That's 6 starts this year at A and 1 at AAA with an ERA of < 1.5. There is no reason whatsoever to fly him back to Ft. Myers except to collect his jammies and laundry.

He has absolutely taken away any question about his place in the list of prospects. There were questions about how they would deal with Barrios...HA! Now they have a real chance to screw up.

All things considered, this was a great performance from Hu. 1 ER over 6 IP with 6 Ks. He lived up to his "competitor" status as he battled the 4 BB to only give up the one run. I couldn't be happier for the kid.

Considering preseason expectations and on-field performance so far, he's gotta be the brightest spot in the minors for the Twins. I think the national experts will begin taking notice.

Plus, he has now started seven games and his team has won every time out!

This is what we said about Chih-Wei Hu in our Prospect Handbook. http://t.co/wVrJA3SleM

— Jeremy Nygaard (@jeremynygaard)

Jumping on the "this is what we said" bandwagon, here's what I wrote about Hu in December when I ranked him as my #13 prospect in the Twins' organization:

13. Chih-Wei Hu – SP – I’m probably the only one you will find ranking Hu in the top 15, but he showed me more command  – of more pitches – and more mound maturity – than any other starting pitcher in Cedar Rapids in 2014, and that’s saying something.

I only wish all of the guys I had in my top 15 were making me look as smart as Hu is.

Since we are bragging :)

Here's the real question... do you send him back to FTM? I'd probably at the least put him in AA fairly soon. He's destroying the FSL. He certainly wasn't overmatched today for what it's worth.

Yeah Hu really belongs in AA and Gonsalves needs to be in High A.  I think it is time for Greg Peavy to step aside and move Hu into that spot.  Two very young pitchers with real good stuff.  That is very encouraging. Now we just need to shake up AAA so we can get some movement for Duffy and Berrios.  Things are looking up.

Here's my Hu-brag:

http://twinsdaily.com/blog/159/entry-6383-30-twins-prospects-ill-be-watching-in-2015/

I had him fifth among a closely bunched group of starting pitchers at the top. I did not merge pitchers and batters but he easily could have been barely in my top ten had I done so.

I had forgotten the TD Prospect book's scouting report on him had the fastball well up in the 90s like that. He's not just some "palmball guy".

The moral of the story is that Hu really isn't a surprise here. The biggest knock I had on him was his age based on that of his competition in Cedar Rapids, but from the sounds of it, that wasn't a big deal. I really think given how he's dismantled the FSL that he should be moved to AA. I think it would be good for him, especially given (granted SSS) that he more than held his own in Rochester today.

I know I'm risking overthinking this, but it might be good to have him make a couple more starts in Florida anyway, after the excitement of his AAA start, just to see if he somehow loses concentration. It's a long season and there are many ups and downs. Maybe there's something additional for him to learn from this.

If he continues to do well, there's plenty of time for a mid-season promotion.
