Wow, I hadn't looked at FSL numbers, but the average OPS is .651 (the AL number is .717). Swim and Garver at .698 and .685 respectively suddenly look pretty good. Their defensive numbers look good, though those don't mean a lot.

I don't remember the FSL being so anemic other years. Swim should probably move up very soon to pair with Turner.

I just looked, and you are correct, sir. In the past 10 years it's fluctuated around the .690-.700 range. If this figure holds up for the rest of the season, it will be a huge and sudden drop.

The encouraging thing about Garver is his splits.  He was terrible in April/May, but his OPS has been over .800 for June/July, as he's looking more like the kid that put up those numbers in the MWL.

And I believe he suffered a concussion in the last game of the season in 2014.  Who knows if, besides the adjustment to the FSL, if there were still some lingering effects from the brain injury.

milb.com is showing that the Twins have released Madison Boer from Chattanooga.  Boer was born in Eden Prairie and was the Twins 2nd round pick in the 2011 draft out of the University of Oregon.  In 2012 the Twins tried using him as a starter, but he was moved to the bullpen in 2013.  He ended his 5 minor league seasons with the Twins organization with a record of 19 wins, 20 losses, 27 saves and a 4.89 ERA.

Remembering that draft well, this makes me sad. I really hoped good things for Boer but considering the performance, it was time... Too many new draft picks and needed promotions to continue drawing this one out.

So we get ready for a bunch of pitcher's duels at the MLB level in about four years?

Jake Mauer told JJ and I tonight after the game that the Twins have released pitcher Chris Mazza, though it won't be announced until Wednesday. Mauer said Mazza basically got caught up in a numbers game and went on to talk about just how deep the Twins organization is in pitching this year. He said they'd let a couple guys go (I assume referring to Mazza and Brandon Bixler) who could pitch for most teams and that wouldn't have been the case in the past.

Mauer mentioned that TIllery and Curtiss could be nearing readiness to return and that Blake Schmit is "moving around" down in Florida, too. Didn't sound like Mauer had been told, yet, who he'd be getting to take Mazza's roster spot, but he did say he'd like to have another position player. He's been working with just 11 position players lately and a 2-man bench is pretty thin.

Too bad about Peterson and Michael.

So . . . Aderlin or Aderling!? This still blows my mind (note: BR finally fixed "Matt Batts" with "Mat Batts").

Yup, Hans Van Slooten saw my tweet about it and said he would fix it that day (whenever that was, a week or so ago).

Kepler pulled from 1st game tonight after reaching in all 3 PA's. Not in line-up for nightcap. Promotion? ... Anyone?

Sorry. Not promoted. Ejected. Got hit on the hand on a check swing, the ump ran him when he showed him the bruise. Dougie got ran too. Not in the 2nd game. With our luck, probably broke his hand.

Tweet from Brice Zimmerman:

ROSTER MOVES: Aaron Slegers promoted to Chattanooga (AA). RHP Omar Bencomo signed as free agent from Wichita (Ind.). Alex Swim to the DL.

Omar Bencomo is a 26-year-old from Venezuela. He spent time in the Rays system from 2007-2011, peaking in the Midwest League. He has played in Venezuela in the winters. This spring, he has played in the independent American Association, splitting time between Laredo and Wichita. Overall, in 13 starts, he is 6-1 with a 3.19 ERA in 84.2 innings. He has 16 walks and 72 strikeouts.

Also, Cedar Rapids signed RHP Nick Anderson. From the Kernels press release:

  Quote

The Milwaukee Brewers originally drafted Anderson in the 32nd round of the 2012 First Year Player Draft out of Mayville State University in North Dakota. This season he has made 25 relief appearances for the Frontier Greys of the Frontier League, posting a 2-0 record, 0.65 ERA and 13 saves. In 27.2 IP, he allowed 17 hits and two runs (all earned) with six walks and 35 strikeouts.

Aren't the Greys the Frontier League team that plays all road games? If so, Class A travel will seem like a piece of cake to Anderson. Pretty sure the Kernels had an open spot on their active roster so no corresponding move should be needed.
