Article: Minnesota Twins Set Opening Day Roster

Recommended Posts

It's almost funny how so many are getting worked up about the opening day roster. Like it or not, as Nelson stated in his article, there were very good reasons why this roster came about. And reading the comments it is quite obvious those just doesn't like the FO and the decisions or course they have made. But UNTIL that changes expect to see a similar process.

BTW, I learned many years ago with Vikings, that life is much, much more than this game. So i gave them up, but still am a fan of the Twins, even in the bad years. My blood pressure is now completely normal. So let's relax a bit and let the season start.

No, Fryer isn't on the 40 man roster and they'd have to cut someone else to add him.

Others weren't on the 40 man roster this Spring (Relief Pitchers for example) and room was made to add them to the roster. Thus, that really wasn't an impediment. I'm not implying that Fryer should (or not) be on the roster--but being on the 40 man roster at the beginning of Spring Training didn't prevent Fryer from being on the Active Roster.

'It's almost funny how so many are getting worked up about the opening day roster.'

Every game in the season counts the same.  Wins in April count the same as wins in September.  Losses do too.  I don't think it's surprising that people prefer to have the best team possible right out of the gate.  Now whether or not a consensus could be reached between 20 fans on what the best 25 man roster would be, much less the whole fan base, is a question to which the answer is almost assuredly no.

He was out by then because of shoulder surgery.

That wasn't until August 26th.  Prior to that, Robinson spent half the season in AAA, being demoted three separate times, apparently due to poor performance or just being deemed unnecessary (only started 7 games in 2.5 months in MLB, 83.1 innings in the field):

Don Kelly was on FOUR consecutive postseason rosters for Detroit -- why didn't we add him?

Hicks hits lefties well and Robinson is terrible against them. What if the real ceiling for Hicks is a 4th OF? Just immediately, there is going to be competition between Buxton, Rosario, Hicks and Arcia. Either Arcia or Vargas will be traded by this team, so maybe that alleviates some of this. The fact is that trades have to happen for Aaron Hicks to be a full-time starter for the Twins. But you know what? I would rather have Aaron Hicks as a lefty masher and 4th OF than all of these jokes the Twins have tried there for the last several years. Also, Hicks is going to be a great guy on the roster to move to any temporary starting role due to DL issues with Rosario, Buxton, Arcia, Kepler, etc.

I would like to keep him around. It is weird to me to see a team just end prospects who don't become starters and then opt for has-been journeymen to fill out a roster.

I would rather have Hicks on the roster as well. However, I feel like it is too early to give up on him and having him as the 4th outfielder is doing that. I also don't think he has shown enough to be on the roster right now.

What confuses me about the roster is that it was assumed that Tori Hunter would mentor Hicks, Rosario, or whoever was in CF.  No chance for that with the current roster.  So, why pay 10 mil for a guy to play subpar defense and mentor no one?

Why can't he mentor Schaefer?

For all we heard about Molitor's supposed baseball intellect, it sure is an uninspiring roster and opening day lineup. I think any TD member could have come up with that roster as well as Molitor and Ryan. :)

Free the prospects!

U assume Molitor made these decisions alone.

You know what they say about assuming: it makes an a s s out of u and...

They may count the same but they may not have the same impact on momentum.  Especially not when all but 3 games in April are against Division rivals.

I was hoping for a "hot start" from this team to take advantage of the schedule.  I don't feel like the Twins have placed the same importance on that.

I wish Monday would get here.  The more I read, the less hopeful I get.

Molitor was in the dugout all last season, and was a minor league coach for the previous ~9 years.  And he was hired before any real offseason moves were made -- Hunter, arbitration tenders, Rule 5, relievers, non-roster invites, etc.

I suspect Molitor's thinking on such matters is simply not that different from TR or Gardy.

IMHO: While what you said is true, re: his time with the team, he was a MLB coach under Gardenhire.  Gardy's body language made it very clear he didn't want Molitor around.  I don't believe he had very much say on the makeup of this years team while he was a coach.  I liked the way he talked about the team this spring, especially his handling of Hicks.  I'm guessing some of these players [ Arcia comes to mind ] may be on a short leash.  And I believe he has more baseball savvy than to acquire middle of the road free agent's to prop-up a 4-time 90 lose team, and block minor leaguer's that seem ready for the majors.

I am for the young blood to be up here and a "get to know these guys" promo!

Same old, same old as far as I see, but glad the former coaches and Manager are different.

Gives me hope, but NOT much excitement for the season.
