Wait ... I thought he was born in Canada.  Can he run?  I want to see a copy of his birth certificate.

As for 'not a serious candidate,' I honestly do not underestimate the stupid voters in this country.

As a quasi-libertarian (so, in other words, a dude without a party representing him) I hope Cruz or someone like him gets the Republican nod and they lose in humiliating fashion.

I'm convinced that may need to happen before the Republicans reach out to people like me and bring us in as the socially progressive, small government wing.  It's just impossible to do that with gomers like this populating the party.

We can joke on this ... but I honestly find this pretty scary.

It's actually pretty great. Last time around, the Republican primary was Clownshoe, Inc.

Bring on the Ted Cruzes and Michele Bachmanns of the world... All they do is make the party look bad to normal, moderate adults. It's my opinion that the GOP needs an enema and the more outrageous the candidates get and the more absurd their policies, the more likely it is that we'll see significant party reform in the near future.

This. I'm not much of a Libertarian anymore - too much of that party has been infested with Republicans too embarrassed to associate with the party but still hold the inane views of the modern GOP - but a strong, rational Republican Party is good for the country as a whole.

I've moved away from the Libertarian viewpoint of small government at all costs and onto the ideal of fiscal responsibility of all costs, preferably at the state government level. Let Mississippi burn for all I care, they're hopeless anyway... But if Minnesota wants a large state government and can afford it, more power to 'em.

I struggle for a term for myself because Libertarian has come to be known as this ridiculously over-the-top, get-rid-of-all government approach and I'm not for that.  I like a limited government with strong regulatory powers and an effective safety net.  One that also includes an education system as strong as it's military.

The problem is that I want the safety net designed by people that want the least amount of government possible for the best results.  Basically, I want government policy to have the core, heartfelt beliefs of liberalism but without the drunkenly stupid way in which they craft solutions.

And the man keeps giving. With his wife leaving Goldman Sachs for the duration of his Presidential run, he'll get his health insurance covered through ... wait for it ... Obamacare.

He also will be taking the large subsidies only given to lawmakers and their staff to make it more affordable to him.  He will continue to try and get rid of Obamacare so that others can't take advantage of it.

Seriously, **** this guy.

Ted Cruz is a honest man, and I hope he will be our next leader.

I struggle to call any politician honest but were I to create an honesty list, Cruz wouldn't be near the top of it. To use just one example of many, he so badly misrepresented the net neutrality argument (calling it "Obamacare" for the internet, which is completely nonsensical and reeks of demagoguery) that he's either incompetent or a liar.

Neither instills faith in his ability to lead this country.

I think moderate Republicans will need to send a courageous sensible Republican candidate out onto the presidential campaign trail to take the bullets. And support that guy to the very end. And then send another moderate out the next time around. Guys like Pawlenty or Mitch Daniels had a real chance to defeat Obama in 2012, but those guys had no hope in the primary season.

So my opinion is that moderate Republicans created this beast, and they will be the only ones who can put it back in the cage. Otherwise this clown show will go on indefinitely.

That's why I was pulling for Jon Huntsman to gain momentum in 2012.

Instead, the party turned its back on him. It was so disappointing that the party would turn its back on the only guy in the debates saying "LISTEN TO THESE PEOPLE, THEY'RE INSANE. I'm normal. I'm smart. Vote for me. For the love of god, VOTE FOR ME."

We don't need to worry about it unless he gets elected.

Then it'll be too late.  That Supreme Court ain't getting younger and no way in hell do I want Cruz choosing justices.  I know he won't get elected ... but ... the thought of it is the stuff that horror stories are made of.

Maybe the opposing ideologies within our SC Justices may finally meet in the middle and decide to stick it out for another 4... to 8 years.

I'm not sure I'd put Rubio or Paul below Walker.  Paul is out there in many respects, but in some respects it's a good out there - areas neither party are addressing well.  (Like prison sentencing and drug laws)

I like that Rand Paul exists. He's the type of guy that keeps other politicians honest, a kind of right-wing equivalent of Bernie Sanders. He bucks his party when he doesn't agree with them and isn't afraid to do things like rant about drone strikes when nobody else is talking about it (but should be talking about it). Congress needs a handful of those people to stir the pot and mess with the establishment.

But along with those virtues comes a whole basketful of crazy. Good for Congress, not so good for a leadership role, much less the leadership role.
