Article: Twins 5th Starter Competition Will Continue

Interesting breakdown!

Just curious, but does the catcher give a thumbs up sign to indicate the pitch should be belt high or above? Or is that simply a given for Pelfrey?

And exactly what and how many fingers are flashed by the catcher to indicate that the ball should be thrown straight? :)

All that other stuff is implied.

Same old Same old with Milone and Pelfry.  5.00+ ERA's - struggle to get through 4 innings.  Much better off to bring in May and let him learn how to be a MLB pitcher in the AL rather than Rochester.  So what if he has a 7.00 ERA?  This season is a lost-cause.  All decisions should be about 2016.  Santana in Center?  Ridiculous unless you intend for him to spend his career there.  Hell, let Hicks play there and hit .180 - immaterial.  Never should have brought in Hunter.  What a waste.  He's standing like a statue in right field preventing the future.  Could care less if Hunter has a 100 RBI's.  it was a waste of $10 million.  Hopefully, this time next year, we are not talking about Pelfry, Milone, Hunter and Hicks in Twins uniforms.  Or if we are, it is because they proved they belonged in MLB in 2015.

I think that right now players with options remaining versus players out of options will dominate the decision making for April. I'm not totally thrilled, but I can understand the impulse by the front office to not throw away resources that can't be gotten back when instead resources that can be gotten back can be stashed.

But that's definitely a mark against the new coaching staff, right? This is the kind of thing we pilloried Gardy for.

Here's that breakdown (all positions, locks excluded)

Out of options: Nunez, Schafer

Veterans (can't be optioned): Pelfrey, Stauffer

Minor league contract (opt-out date): Boyer, Robinson

Rule 5 (must be offered back to original team): Graham

Minor league contract: Fryer, Hamburger, Bernier

If the Twins add anyone with a minor league contract, they have to take someone off the 40-man.

I so hate this thinking.....it's better to have better players in AAA, so that when there are issues, we can bring them up, rather than....it's better to have better players up, so there are less issues. Hate it.

Coaching Staff? No. Ryan and the rest of the Front Office--it would have been their decision to favor the veterans over the "up-and-comers".

Generally agreed, although some have suggested that Molitor and Allen would shake things up a bit in this regard too.  If they ultimately fail to lobby for any higher upside new blood on the roster this spring, I will be a little disappointed in them (although probably more disappointed in TR, for not yet learning that lesson himself from the past few years).

I hope all 3 of these pitchers throw phenomenal games the next couple of days.  Does that make me a bad person?  :)

It makes you a better person than me, because I only hope May throws a phenomenal game while Pelfrey and Milone get blasted and yanked in the first inning.  But let's just keep that between you and me.  Wouldn't want it getting out that I'm an evil dirtbag who has a personal bias in the matter.
