Article: Twins Option Alex Meyer To Triple-A

Recommended Posts

With so many pitchers in the running for the final spot, Meyer didn't have much of a chance.  It sounds like he wasn't in a good frame of mind for that last appearance.  5 2/3 innings just isn't enough.  Some one should reach out to Randy Johnson and see if he's available for a pep talk.

That is why some of the off-season moves seemed strange. You need roster space for your young players. They signed players as if they were just short of a playoff team.

It is unreasonable to expect that our 25 year old supposedly hot shot pitching prospect could beat out those extremely underwhelming 5 spot options?

This.  We had one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball last year.  If you are a pitcher and can't earn a spot, then that's on you, regardless of prospect status or age.

The idea that we should be handing spots to guys just because they are a prospects is silly; get guys out and earn a job.  its similar to how the second string quarterback is always the fan favorite.

Yes, and you have to wonder how great this prospect really is when he's 25 and can't beat out guys like Pelfrey and Milone (especially Milone since FA contract isn't a factor).  We supposedly won that Span trade when it happened.

My recollection is that it was the Twins front office who was hyping Meyer in the first place. They traded a pretty good center fielder and lead off man for Meyer.

Again, obviously Meyer will get his chance, and both sides of this whole conversation will become moot.

Yet for some people, the fact that Meyer continues to be held down in AAA is just more evidence of the wisdom of the Twins front office.

Someone help me get my head around that.

he's 25. I don't think anyone is forgetting anything about his age. How many Elite starters haven't appeared in the majors by their 25th birthday? I have no idea, but I'm guessing not many (and, yup, some have, that's not really the point, you don't bet on the exceptions).

How many pitchers are 6' 9"? Meyer is already an exception to start with...
