Twins Add Four Players To The 40-Man Roster

If you drop someone from the 40 man roster, I believe they go through the waiver process and a team would just have to claim them and put them on their 40 man roster.  If a player is pickup up in the Rule 5 draft, the team has to pay $50,000 plus keep him on the 25 man roster.  So it more likely to get someone through the Rule 5 draft then through waivers.

Also with Scott Diamond, the Twins didn't keep him on the roster, they had to trade a player back to the Braves so they could send him to the minors.

You're right.  If they dropped someone off the 40-man, they would have to go through waivers.  We will probably see a lot of guys get dropped off of 40 man rosters here shortly as teams try to protect prospects.  Some guys will get claimed, but most won't.

I don't think the $50k for the rule 5 draft really bothers teams too much.  Every team can afford that.  you're right though, that keeping a player on the 25 man roster could be a challenge.  But, it seems to be easier for pitchers to stick than position players.  Any team that wants to have a 13 man bullpen can stash a guy and pretty much only let him pitch in mop up duties, and then return him to the minors if they want (a la Ryan Presley).

You're also right about Diamond.  The Twins had him on the roster until the last cuts of spring training.  They didn't want to keep him on the roster the whole year so they traded Billy Bullock to Atlanta for Diamond.

If I remember correctly the 1st year Benson and Parmelee were eligible for the rule 5, they were not protected or taken (though that's the  year they both had great years and were added later).  When I think of guys like Micheals or Goodrum I think why risk it and then remember the option clock starts with these guys. Will they be ready, here to stay in 3 years? Can a team stash them?

Last year people were surprised when they  adding Polanco, Vargas, and Kepler. All 3 seem  like smart moves in retrospect, lets hope these moves are also well planned out as well.

My guess: Twins lose someone, just maybe not the guy or guys we think.

I thought Benson and Parmelee were both added the first time they were eligible. They were recalled that September when they were called up because they had been optioned in spring training.

Remember, however, with Polanco and Kepler, they are both eligible for 4 option years because of their age/level when they were added.

Further picky picky picky... why was a post about players being added to the "major league roster" moved to the minor league forum?

40-man ("major league") roster talk is probably of great interest to the main forum too, if you could keep it cross-linked there.

Because there was already a 40-man talk thread here.  Also, none of the players being discussed are on the ML team, never have been (yet), are all minor leaguers.  This isn't a 25-man roster talk. <shrug>  It's just one of those things that could really go either place, but because of the first point, that was the main impetus for my moving it here.

How does it work now? If they later have to remove someone, and they sign a FA.....what is the status of the person that is now off the 40 man?

I'm fairly sure that no matter what the circumstance, if a player is taken off the 40-man roster, that player has to go through the waiver process.  I think after that, what happens to the player is determined by the amount of MLB service time they have accrued and how many times they've been added and removed from a 40-man roster.  They are either assigned to a minor league roster, or some can elect to become free agents.

That is my understanding at least.   I should probably do some more research to the details, I guess.

These 4 players cannot be removed from the 40-man roster until sometime around spring training though.  This is part of the rules for protecting them from the Rule V draft (I believe, but I'm only assuming this is the reason why they can't be removed).
