Historically I don't know that's the case.  They were well-paid, but Nick Punto probably made more in inflation-adjusted baseball income than most HoF players prior to 1970.

Yes I agree, I should have specified that I meant in terms of a pitching coach for the Twins in 2014, some of the hall of famers are set for life money-wise, so they'd have to want to coach for other reasons.

A HOF pitcher would have more talent  than the average pitching coach. I don't think any of them did not have to work at refining their talent.

In term of having money inhibiting the desire to work, Molitor made over 40 million in his career, 

yes - I think Molitor has a different motivation than making a living. He did take an extended break following his playing career to spend time with his family. I think that different motivation is a good thing, and something that Twins fans should be at least a little excited about. The cliche "he wants to win" is particularly true of Molitor, and it shows in the way he goes about his business.

I think you're dreaming if you think Blyleven or Morris will be the pitching coach- there would be serious concerns from the FO that those guys wouldn't do enough to protect the team's investments.

 

I wouldn't choose those two either, but why do you think they wouldn't protect the team's investment?  If it's because they are critical of pitch counts etc. that shouldn't matter much as it's the manager that decides pitching changes.  I'd actually hope that a pitching coach encourages the manager to let the guys go deeper into games.  I don't want a Yes-Man pitching coach..  That's of course assuming Molitor takes the recomendation simply as advice, and uses his own judgment for the final decision.

I brought Blyleven into this discussion... But I want to be clear that I'm not advocating the hiring of Bert.

 

I'm not advocating anyone because I dint know enough about the horses racing.

 

Just mentioning Bert because his Dutch squads lacked big names yet performed decently in the WBC's.

 

Bert just maybe someone that nobody thought about it... And maybe they ain't thinking about him for good reason.

Not to mention everyone gets to hear Bert talk on the Broadcasts, he'd be second fiddle in the Twins dugout. I think he's probably happy doing what he's doing now, it's a pretty sweet gig.

 

I think the new coaches will all have to be willing to be second (or 3rd/4th) in command to Molitor. I think Bert has too big an ego for that (that's not a slight on Bert, I think his ego is one of the things that made him a great pitcher and why he's usually an entertaining person on air). . .

 

The pitching coach will have to defer to Molitor, and I don't see that going over particularly well with every candidate mentioned. Who's the closest thing to Leo Mazzone/Dave Duncan/Larry Rothschild in Paul Molitor's circle of teammates?

Just saying that the pitch count thing wasn't just a Gardy/Andy philosophy. It goes all the way down the Twins minor league system, too- the manager makes the pitching changes during the game, but he's under pressure from the FO to be extremely careful with his starters, especially the young ones. That's why I don't think a pitch count opponent like Blyleven or Morris would get the job.

I'm looking forward to seeing a list of candidates from the Twins camp and/or names of people that have scheduled interviews for the position.

I realize that the ink is barely dry on Molitor's contract, but I wish the Twins would throw us a bone, I am probably not alone in thinking that the pitching coach will getting a lot attention and scrutiny from the fanbase.

So true.  PtoC  was a saying--manage by pitch-count was an organization philosophy.  The philosophy came from the top--not Anderson.
