I am really not unhappy that the did not sign Mazzilli at this point. An older College Junior who projects at DH/PH should not be much of a priority. They can probably be better off getting that $ and spending it for a sleek fielding Latin American middle infielder or 2.

I would argue that his deal wasn't official until he passed his physical, which he didn't. Impossible to say exactly what happened.

Yeah, I saw that... I'm waiting on confirmation that Leverett is, in fact, 27.

 

Then I saw this picture... and, well... another "Twins pitcher" under the knife for a UCL tear. (Thrylos 1, Jeremy 0.)

 

I wonder how that works: Signing bonus, injury settlement, etc. Do the Twins pay for the surgery? Why would they release him? Why didn't they find this injury BEFORE he used the injured arm to sign a contract? The other article called it "career-threatening". I wish I had a source that could answer all these questions!

According to this link, he had a bone spur in his elbow that "cut his UCL like a rope."

 

"I will begin my rehab process in Statesboro and finish up my degree this fall. The plan is just to rehab, basically, for the next year. I’ll be around Statesboro rehabbing and trying to get back to full strength. The Twins told me if they see I’m back at full strength that they will look to re-sign me. So that’s the plan as of now."

One could also turn that around, and say that the Twins spent more on the draft than anyone else.

 

Very true. That should have been the expectation though. Because their pool was so large, it didn't surprise me they didn't spend it all. The Yankees spending so little is a bigger surprise.

 

Well, to be fair, had the Twins signed Mazzilli, and we certainly believe they tried, they would have been pretty close to the limit.

 

Yeah, or probably over... I was just really hoping that there would be a Plan B lined up... a guy like James Marvel or Timmy Robinson. Josh Bell proved it last year, everybody had a price!

Looks like Andrew Ferreira has signed as well. So he could be our lucky 27.

Disappointing that they didn't use up all of the pool, or even go a little crazy and actually tap into the extra 5% and buy a few more guys out of their commitments. Even though it was a weaker draft class, this was a real opportunity for the Twins to add some talent and it feels that after Buxton and Berios they punted.

If he signed, he got the $100K or so bonus. Then he was released. He keeps the money and he becomes a free agent and you answer the question about who is paying for the surgery.

This is really really really weird from a medical perspective, unless there is a contact injury that broke the bone and caused the spur, because on that side of the elbow (we are talking the inside) the UCL will break before the bone if there is just a repetition-stress injury (like most of them). Weird.
