I realize that this is not something the Twins will likely do, in fact, it is extremely doubtful, but one has to wonder about the trade value of some of these players going up if they came at no cost. The payroll is low already and if the Twins just kept these guys they would be paying this amount anyway. Maybe the Twins could save a few hundred thousand on Willingham and Correia, but they could also be offering these players for no cost other than the mid-tier prospects in return. Suzuki should get a top 250 prospect, Willingham and Fien top 500, Duensing and Correia top 1000. This should happen and the Stephen Pryors of the world should not be a part of the equation.

It might help get them off our roster, but it won't improve return.  Teams generally don't sell prospects, particularly not for ~$2 million or less.

Other than Nolasco and Mauer, the Twins don't have any salary to eat. It really takes players with a significant commitment in future years.

 

The amount owed Morales, Correia and Willingham would be insignificant to any team. Even the Mariners found a way to add Morales. They know the value of the prospect exceeds the dollars remaining on Morales contract.

I agree with spycake.  I think the best we can hope for regarding all our trade chips is a high upside/high risk prospect that may or may not make it.  There isn't a whole lot of salary to eat and when there are other players that are being made available, our trade chips aren't that appealing.

Just don't see that amount of money making any difference for a team that would acquire them.

A prospect below the 250 rating is not much of a prospect ulnless the are under 21 in rookie level ball. It is not quite garbage out, garbage in but close. The little value that these prospects have is that they can be fodder for a better band aid than what you pick up off the scap heap. You can call them lottery tickets, but it is for Northstar cash.

I think the positive outcomes of trading most of the usual suspects:

 

•Create opportunities for current prospects. This is number 1 for me.

 

•Save money - we don't care, but they do.

 

•Avoid losing someone for nothing. Asset management 101.

 

 

If you are holding your breath for a good prospect coming back, outside of maybe Suzuki, I thing Pryor type guys, damaged goods or older guys with limited upside, is likely par for the course. 

 

Still, nobody thought much of Escobar when he was acquired, and he has improved into at least a major league ball player. He keeps the Liriano deal from being a total loss.

 

I will give the Twins credit if they at least get a few guys coming back.

This is all I'm hoping for. One thing TR has a history of is finding those types of diamonds in the rough.

The thing about prospects is that they can come out of nowhere. Josmil Pinto is a perfect example. Acquiring sub-250 prospects is still worth it. Good grief that averages to the top 8-9 per team. I would trade Willingham for a J.D. Williams or a Tyler Duffey or a Stuart Turner.
