Go ahead. Ask away.

1) Billy Beane commented in an article that (and I'm paraphrasing) teams would move away from valuing a player in isolation and rather start focusing on how a player A makes player B better. Is that something you and/or the Twins have been working on? I've always thought the Twins did something like that b/c, as bad as his 2010 season was, Nick Blackburn still managed to have a quality start in well over half his starts. (You can absolutely win a beer on that bit of trivia) And that had to dependent on his teammates.

2) How many in your department are into LARP? Gotta be at least half, right?

I'd be curious, without needing specifics mind you, to hear how similar things are behind the curtain as what we saw unveiled from Houston.

But I'd totally understand if that was a taboo thing to talk about.

Trades are difficult to put together for a lot of reasons and there is usually a lot of back and forth.

It sucks what happened to them and I'm glad we weren't mentioned in anything.

I would think many teams try as best they can currently. Platooning is probably an example of that. The new system might just make it easier and more accurate.

Your accidental ban of Jack (on the assumption that it was an impersonator) remains one of the funniest things to happen in the history of the world.

I thought that was really funny. What kind of dumb ass member of a front office jumps into a discussion board?

The data really has to come out of his hand.

Googgles required.

... but need a bigger boat.

Thank you, comparing the Twins to Houston was just something impossible not to think about after reading that report.

Jack, 1) if you were GM of a team, how much weight would you put on the analytics you currently do, versus fundamental scouting reports and other forms of input? 2) Do you ever play Out Of The Park baseball game, and how ridiculously unrealistic is it from your POV? :)

Quite so.

Jack, what duties do you have for the All Star Game?

ill scout the Futures Game on Sunday and after that spend some time at HR Derby with my dad and go the game with my family on Tues. I haven't watched a game with my family ever.

So for you it really is a field of dreams. Enjoy every minute.

Thank you for doing this.

I heard Nate Silver and Keith Law do a podcast several months ago. One application of metrics Silver suggested had to do with cross checking scouting evaluations. By this he meant evaluating reports of scouts over a set period of time and seeing if they would consistently over- or under-rate talent in their reports and to use analytics to "adjust" their scouting reports accordingly for final reports (but still use the valuable resource of scouts).

I'm curious if this is something the Twins do? I know there is an infrastructure of scouts (local, area, cross-checker, etc) - but are analytics used to analyze the scouts themselves?

Bring sunscreen, hydrate everyone, and have fun!

Jack,

My guess is that the popular modern metrics(such FIPS, UZR and WAR) often a prominent part of this site are largely unused by you and your department. Would I be right?

I'd love it if you would elaborate a little on this. I presume you are not scouting things like arm angle and consistent release point and so forth. And all the players in this game are well known and have dossiers a mile long. What will you be looking for?

Someone who would post on a message board using someone else's identity as their profile would most likely have some serious issues. Jacque is texting me - gotta go.

[it is cool you are doing this.]

And a warning to applicants, go look at all your social media postings about the Twins!!!

..... Twins Daily experiences massive archive deletions as potential applicants delete 95% of their posts.

On an unrelated(?) note, negative Twins posts on Twins Daily decrease by 95%.

It's pretty hilarious how my experience aligns exactly with their requirements.

Hmm.

Hmmmm.

I was about to say the same thing. I'm more of a back end systems guy, but you'd be a great fit... Wonder if the Twins could beat out your place.
