25 man roster on August 31st

Recommended Posts

I know there will be injuries, trades, and players released, but for fun I'd love to hear who everyone thinks will be on the active 25 man roster on August 31st, the day before rosters expand. I'll go first.

SS-Santana

3B-Plouffe

Sept. Call-ups: Meyer, Pino, Fryer, Florimon, Sano?

Notably not called-up: Hicks

Sano rehabbing at the MLB level would be a total surprise, I can't see any situation where that happens since he'll be lucky if he's even able to play simulated games by then, but that is a nice bold prediction. The Hicks non-call-up I'd agree with also. The Twins have refused to call up guys in their dog house the last several years.

My guess:

C-Suzuki

1B-Mauer

2B-Dozier

SS-Escobar

3B-Plouffe

LF-Arcia

CF-Santana

RF-Parmelee

DH-Colabello

Be-Fuld

Be-Romero

Be-Florimon

Be-Fryer

SP-Hughes

SP-Gibson

SP-Meyer

SP-May

SP-Pino

RP-Perkins

RP-Burton

RP-Swarzak

RP-Pressly

RP-Deduno

RP-Thielbar

RP-Hoffman

Trade: Willingham, Morales, Correia, Duensing, Fein

Call ups: Pinto, Herrmann, Achter, Tonkin, Iberra, Johnson and Vargas

I'm probably in the minority and hope they sell high on Suzuki as I don't believe he's as good as he appears now, but I think they'll get suckered in due to his strong clubhouse presence, which in fairness, does have some value.

C Pinto

1B Mauer

2B Dozier

SS Escobar

3B Plouffe

RF Arcia

CF Santana

LF Parmelee

DH Colabello

BENCH Nunez, Fryer, Fuld, Herrmann

SP

Gibson

Hughes

Nolasco

May

Darnell

BULLPEN

Perkins

Johnson

Pino

Tonkin

Pressly

Thielbar

Deduno

plus note that up to 8 of the above may not be needed for Twins 2015!

Twins trading away alot of chips, especially Fien, who actually has value and do we want to chance that he becomes the next Burton?

What becomes exciting in all of this is who the Twins add to the 40-man when they delete such names as Willingham, Suzucki, Morales, Correia, Dunesing, Swarzak, Burton, Guerrier.

They are not going to add Sano and start his service time so soon after an injury. They won't add Hoffman, who is now in the Phillies organization. They might add back in folks like Aaron Thompson, Wilkin Ramirez, Chris Rahl, Doug Bernier...giving all a shot as a September call-up with little hopes of maintaining a roster spot come winter. The TWIS do not have to add ANY Meyers and such until the winter, truly, really. Why would they at this moment when the end of the season the Twins can see what Darnell, Johnson, Pino, Tonkin and such will bring to the team or if they bring any value. And, again, many of these 40-man add names, would become minor free agent if not extended.

Yes, would love to see the Twins revert to rebuild mode if they stink come August end and give Buxton and Sano and Rosario and any otehr names at bats, or Berrios and Stewart innings, or maybe even give Kepler a taste so he knows what he has to play for i the next couple of years if he wants to stay a Twin.

Of course, this assumes that most ALL the players the Twins cwould get in return are not 40-man men...yet!

I like Nick's a lot, other than I think Arcia should stay in RF, because that is where he will be next year, imo. And, I'd like more turnover in the RP.

I am really waffling on Suzuki, depending on their willingness to actually play Pinto at C.

I'll take a stab:

C-Pinto, Herrmann

INF-Mauer, Dozier, Nuñez, Escobar, Santana, Plouffe

OF--Fuld, Parmelee, Arcia, Rosario

DH--Colabello

SP--Hughes, Gibson, Nolasco, May, K Johnson

RP-Pino, Swarzak, Deduno, Thielbar, A Thompson, Tonkin, Perkins

This would mean that the following have been moved: Suzuki, Willingham, Morales, Correia, Duensing, Burton, Fien. In actuality, if that many guys are moved, I would expect some of the players received in return to be on the roster.

Doesn't Suzuki have to stay on the roster even into next year simply because Pinto is not much with the glove? Or will his bat make up for that? Personally I do not think so.
Accentuate the positive! I don't think Pinto is that bad at all. He works hard, is pretty good at blocking pitches and his throwing problems really aren't due to his arm strength. Learning on the job from August 1st would be fine.

Trying to find a defense-first receiver would be a top priority this off-season if it is deemed that Pinto is that far away. I suspect the verdict will be that he still needs work, but with better than average hitting would translate to an acceptable first string catcher.

If Collabello (31 yrs old next Spring) doesn't hit in this call up. . will he be outrighted by Sept 1 (remember they offered him to a Korean team for $1M) and either Rodriguez or Romero given a shot for 30 games in September before they become minor league Free Agents?

I love this stuff. It's like scribbling on napkins, but now I get to toss it out there for everyone to see. LOL

C= Suzuki (stays) Herrmann. (Let's Pinto play daily until September)

1B=Mauer

2B=Dozier

SS=Escobar...mostly

3B=Plouffe

Ut=Nunez

RF=Arcia

CF=Santana (also at SS) and Fuld

LF=Parmelee

Rest=Colabello and Morales (strong hunches)

SP=Hughes

SP=Nolasco (healthy again)

SP=Gibson

SP=May (I think it's time and real)

SP=Pino (Deduno? Pino is the new Deduno until September barring injury?)

RP=Perkins

RP=Fien (foolish to trade him)

RP=Duensing (sorry haters, but he's solid)

RP=Thielbar (talented, will get better, part of the future)

RP=Swarzak (somewhat down this year, but a solid fixture)

RP=Deduno (Pino?)

RP=Burton or Guerrier (don't see both unless something happens with Pino, Deduno or injury)

A trade could bring back a ML ready OF.

Correia, Willingham are traded, possibly Burton.

I think Suzuki and Morales stay.

September brings up Pinto, Meyer for a taste out of the pen, Tonkin, Achter, Darnell and Johnson.

What should be:

C - Pinto

1B - Mauer

LF - Parmelee

CF - Hicks

RF - Arcia

DH - Colabello

I feel like I am forgetting somebody else who will be gone, but whatever.

Also: September calls should go to Rohlfing, Romero, Guerra, Darnell, Beresford, and Ortiz.

By August 31'st this is all gut based hypothesizing, but enjoyable and intriguing nonetheless.

C- Chris Herrmann (just a small gut feeling he takes the job for a while)

1B- Joe Mauer

2B- Brian Dozier

3B- Trevor Plouffe

SS- Danny Santana

LF- Chris Colabello

CF- Sam Fuld

RF- Oswaldo Arcia

DH- Josmil Pinto

Bench: Escobar, Nunez, Fryer, (Parmelee, W. Ramirez, E. Farris, D. Ortiz)

Rotation: Hughes, Gibson, Nolasco (just back from DL), May, Darnell

-Note: Kris Johnson/Logan Darnell start in place of Nolasco while on DL

Bullpen: Perkins, Fien, Thielbar, Swarzak, Pressly, Tonkin, Johnson

Traded: Willingham, Correia, Morales, Duensing, Burton, Suzuki, Deduno

Gone somehow: Guerrier

Call-Ups: Farris (if not already on the bench), Polanco, Achter, Romero, Vargas, Hamburger/Thompson/Pino, Ibarra

-Note: I would like to see Beresford, Guerra, and Gilmartin, but 10 call ups is far more than likely. Also note that there is no Meyer, because I believe he will get a look before August 31'st and reach an innings limit/is shut down. If he is around by the end of the season I don't belive he will be used much at all.

Interesting lineups all but hopefully come spring of 2015 any of these predictions will be wrong or next season will easily be another 90+ loss fiasco. Plus just about everyone is predicting that when Sano and Buxton and Meyer and May are up for good (2016 & beyond) a contending team will ensue. It will take much more than just those four players for excellence to start happening at Target Field. Hopefully Twins management can cobble it all together effectively.

Always scary putting thoughts down permanently on such a volatile situation as the Twins 25 man roster. First a quick question, when was the last time a team moved 6+ players at the deadline? Suzuki, Willingham, Morales, Correia, Duensing, Fien or Burton might all draw interest but they're not all going to get moved. Even if they all had suitors and deals to match the Twins aren't the Cubs/Astros/Marlins. They just won't move that many veterans.

Alright putting my own thoughts down.

C: Suzuki

1B: Mauer

2B: Dozier

SS: Santana

3B: Plouffe

LF: Parmelee

CF: Hicks

RF: Arcia

DH: Vargas

Bench: Nunez, Fryer, Escobar, Colabello

SP: Hughes

SP: Correia

SP: Nolasco (or Meyer if Nolasco spends significant time on DL)

SP: Gibson

SP: May

RP: Perkins

RP: Fien

RP: Thielbar

RP: Swarzak

RP: Pressly

RP: Tonkin

RP: Ibarra

I think Duensing, Morales and Willingham get traded. Correia is bad enough that he isn't tradeable but not terrible enough to out right cut him. Burton and Deduno get DFA'd. I think the Twins realize that Meyer and May are the future and they will get the starts instead of Pino/Johnson assuming it's more than a spot start or two. Logan Darnell could go to the bullpen instead of Ibarra. I fully expect Hicks to be recalled at the beginning of August. The Twins don't have any other CF close (despite the wishes of the Twins public and perhaps FO too). He is only 24 and he is starting to show he can hit AA pitching again. In a lost season there is no reason he doesn't get another shot (unless he is really scuffling in the minors). I'm probably a little bullish on Vargas. It's more likely that Colabello is at DH with Vargas at AAA.

oldguy10: I didn't list any players in return because I don't see any of the four bringing back major league level players. I would suspect that they would bring back A or AA players. If a team has a marginal OF (think Alex Presley, Sam Fuld, Darin Mastoianni), the Twins might look at that type of throw in.

They won't add Hoffman, who is now in the Phillies organization.

Yes, that would seem unlikely. I was thinking of Aaron Thompson, the other journeyman lefty at Rochester. It's hard to keep all of Rochester's journeymen lefties straight. I predict he replaces Duensing while Johnson continues to start in Rochester.

TwinsTerritory - The Twins already have marginal players in their system, why would they need more? And Sam Fuld is even on the MLB roster. And they have already gone through Presley and Mastroianni and found both wanting. Marginal prospects would be fine but not players of the ilk you list, please.

My guess:

C Suzuki (Will be overpaid in an extension)

1B Mauer

2B Dozier

SS Santana/Escobar

3B Plouffe

LF Parmelee

CF Fuld/Santana

RF Arcia

Bench: Colabello, Herrman (UTIL), Pinto (C/DH), whoever is not playing between Fuld and Escobar.

Rotation (in any order):

Hughes

Gibson

Pino

Nolasco (if healthy, otherwise Kris Johnson)

May

Bullpen:

Perkins (CL)

Burton

Fien

Duensing

Thielbar

Swarzak

Deduno

Sano will not play in a game this year. Meyer is almost guaranteed not to get called up. Those have been said by the organization.

I don't think they will look for guys like that, I simply meant that would be the only type of major league ready player that they may take back in a trade. You are correct that they have plenty of marginal players in the system, but not major league ready outfielders (particularly center fielders). As a throw in to a trade, they may take back somebody to play outfield for a couple months, especially if they trade Willingham and don't want to bring Hicks back up this year.

Your first post asked where the players are that they will get in return. My answer is they will be in Fort Myers, Cedar Rapids, and New Britain, not on the 25 man roster this year.
