Can't help but notice

I can't help but notice that 8 out of the 16 stories on the Twins Daily front page are pieces about the Twins minor leagues. The All-Star game which will be played at Target Field is only a week away and yet the interest seems to be in the Twins minor league system even if it's two best (Buxton and Sano) players have played less than 10 games between them this season. Not being critical or complaining, I just find it interesting and seems to be a telling story of where the Twins are in the eyes of Minnesota baseball fans.

Keep in mind that Twins daily was also created by merging several Twins blogs, several of which dealt with the minor leagues exclusively. A lot of the people that came here (at least me) came because Seth's minor league blog was assimilated here. I think a lot of the visitors to this site also want to discuss the minor leagues more than the average fan and a lot of initial fan created articles probably cover minor league stuff. There's lots of places to go to get coverage of the Twins but only a handful of places where you can discuss Berrios and Stewart, for example.

The Future is tomorrow!

I think the Twins are still fun to watch this year (more than in the recent past), but I am also looking forward to seeing more of the youth movement. From the sound of the rumor mill, it seems the Twins might be deal away some veterans soon.

I'm sure there will be enough of the All-Star "stuff" in the coming week, however this is a Twins site and the AS Game is a whole baseball thing. Granted, it's being played in our backyard, so I imagine we will see more of it covered on Twins daily than in the past, but I come here to read about the Twins and Twins prospects. Not Derek Jeter's last gang bang with the National League at Target field.

I think it's natural to gravitate towards optimism when you discuss your favorite team (or at least to seek out areas of optimism). For now, that's the minor league system. The Major League team has gone into a tailspin while the minor league rosters boast some of the highest ranked prospects in all of baseball. Even without Buxton and Sano, there's still plenty of talent to talk about. Talking about the big league club is depressing at the moment...

A couple of notes...

1.) This is a good point. First and foremost, I am proud of the minor league coverage on Twins Daily, so that will certainly remain a focal point.

2.) The fact that the All Star game is at Target Field certainly makes it more interesting. I'm happy for Kurt Suzuki and Glen Perkins.

3.) I'd encourage people to consider writing up some "Blogs" about the All Star game, if you would like. Some could wind up on the front page, but the Blogs page is always a great place for even more coverage. If you have a topic you'd find interesting, write it up!

Thanks for the great input though. It is definitely something we'll consider as well.

At this point the future is the only promising thing about this team. The ASG is a great showcase for TF and Minneapolis but other than Perk and Zuke it holds little appeal to me, although Dozier in the HR derby might be fun.

I think the stories tend to go where the interest lies for the team as a whole. Lately the Twins are loosing a lot of 1 run games because the offense has been inept. not a fun topic, while The Twins have tons of top minor league prospects that are succeeding and getting promoted and making progress coming back from injury. That is much more fun to talk about. The first month of the season when the Twins were hitting the content went towards analyzing if the Twins could maintain and be a .500 team this year.

I have similar thoughts. I am glad we got the all-star game, but I highly doubt I will watch. I can only watch about five minutes of the HR derby, just the same thing over and over. Going would be fun, but not $150 fun.

I will probably tape the futures game and fast forward until I find the Twins guys. But you don't get a great read on a guy after one at bat.

I am much more excited about the progress of key players that will help the big league club win in the future.

Personally I love the fact that TwinsDaily has so much minor league coverage. I live in Kentucky and it is not as easy to keep up with the minor league teams where I am and TwinsDaily helps me do that. So thank you to all the writers/moderators/contributers who make TwinsDaily what it is.

Well, I'm voting Morneau whenever I have a few minutes free (amazing how many votes you can cast in 5 minutes). Other than that, I'm happy for Perk and Suzuki but rarely have any interest in AS activities and that really hasn't changed just because the game is at TF.

I hope that some of the folks who attend Fan Fest, the futures game, the HR Derby and the actual game will tell us about their experiences -- but unless they are Carnac, I don't expect to read about them until next week. :)

I made the mistake of looking at some of the food options on another site. I about had a heart attack just by looking so no need for that coverage here.

Right now, the Major League Club is just pretty darn depressing but there are LOTS of games and lots of potential stars in the minors. Thank heavens they give us something to anticipate.

I am convinced that the posters on this site are comprised of two main groups with a small percentage being actual Minnesota Twins fans.

Group 1) Twins minor league fans. There are a lot of stories, threads and posts involving the Twins minor league players. Most major league threads eventually devolve into who/why some young minor league player should be on the major league team. I dare you to find a complete thread with no mention of a minor league player.

Group 2) Opposing team fans trolling the site. My theory is that the majority of the 'trade this player / that player' posts are by fans of other teams. They either want a specific player for their favorite team as shown by their posts referencing their team's recent injury or lineup hole or they just want to influence local public opinion on a Minnesota player so that the front office feels that it would be OK to not compete and give up on this year and trade away useful major league players. They feel that if Minnesota fields a minor league team at the major league level their team will have a better chance of winning. When was the first call for a trade? First day of the season if I'm not mistaken.

Group 3) The true Minnesota Twins fans. Apparently a small group of posters on the site due to their 'Minnesota Nice' attitude. They don't want to rock the boat and cause conflict. These people want the Twins to win. They want them to be competetive and try to win every year, not give up two weeks into the season and call up the minor leaguers.

I don't feel like I fit in any of those 3 groups. I guess I'll just have to go start my own lonely group -- like the Maytag repairman.

You have 3 groups listed here. Personally I think you're very wrong, the vast majority of members on this site care a great deal about the Twins and are comprised of a single group that are far more passionate and knowledgeable than the average fan. There are different ways to approach and express it but I believe virtually everyone on here wants the Twins to be competitive.

While I too disagree with the entire post, I find #2 most amusing. The thought that a fan from another site would post hypothetical trades on this site, to entice the Twins fans to pressure the GM into actually making the move.....or that the Twins GM is actually reading the comments on this site and acting on it. That is interesting.

I agree with TwinsNorth. Huge Twins fans post on this site and want the Twins to win. Definitely frustration by many, including me that it has taken this long and that a clear roadmap has not been laid out. 95% of the arguments relate to the best way forward as not everyone agrees.

I get it, and I'm with you on this, John. Before I came to TD, I never paid attention to the minor leaguers until they came to spring training with a good chance to make the Show (well, the exception may be when our future stars are so highly regarded that they are a major story in Sports Illustrated!). I hope that doesn't make me a bad fan, but that's the way I am. I do tend to remember the past teams and players with both joy and tears.

Moderator's note: Let's please not let this tangent divert the original topic of the thread. Moreover, trying to characterize groups of people is one of the red flags that signal a post is likely to generate more heat than light. Defining who is a "real" fan is another.
