July 2 isn't that far away. Probably worth starting to start talking about the international signings. Last year, the Twins big prize was Lewin Diaz, a 16 year old future power 1B that will hopefully develop into a middle order bat. Not sure who the big names are on the market, but it looks like the Yankees are going to do what the Cubs did last year and significantly outspend their allotment. The Twins certainly won't do that, but they will likely be sitting on a pretty nice pool amount.

 

Start posting names about guys you want. Personally, I want them going after pitchers and middle infielders.

 

EDIT: I'm going to use this track the signings/bonuses. We didn't do that last year and I think it's beneficial.

 

Total Pool: 3.6 million.

Jean Carlos Arias - OF - 450K

The Yankees have publicly stated this is there intention. I'd have to believe there are plenty of other clubs that are also going to do this but who have the good sense to keep it to themselves until the signings begin.

 

I'm not anticipating the Twins getting any of the top 20 or so guys unless the Twins also go over their allotment which I think we all suspect they will not.

I get the feeling it's going to be 'always the bridesmaid' kind of year for the Twins. No top 20 guys. They'll spend the cash, but it going to be spread out. The top guys I liked were Gilbert Lara(3B), Huascar Ynoa(SP) , and Adrian Rondon (SS). The Twins were in on Lara and Ynoa, but it's believed Lara has agreed to big money from the Brewers, Rondon with Tampa Bay, and Ynoa will end up with either the Red or White Sox.

You can get Fantastic players with $50,000 and under bonus, everyone is so far out its crazy trying to project 15-16 year olds, but it always fun hear about a high bonus guy going high. Don't know if there is any of those guys for the Twins this year.

this new system of international signings is going to be much more abused than the old one. only sitting out a year as a penalty for overspending incites those teams to go ahead and spend away every other year and, once they've started to spend, to keep throwing money at players because of the impending sanctions. this will likely result in a group of teams taking turns to dominate the market. this year it'll be the yankees and a few others, next year it'll be the cubs and what ever other team is on that cycle.

Rays And Yankees in the Even Years, Rangers and Cubs in the odd years, with teams like the Brewers blowing their budget out just to sign one guy sprinkled in between. Ben Badler reported another odd side effect. Some teams can't even see the top prospect play anymore, they come to verbal agreements 6-12 months ahead of time so their trainer take them off the show circuits to avoid injury. No high school ball so top pool teams never get to see these guys and reporters and experts can't get much info on them.

Yeah, that's the good news. The bad news is that it is reported that the Twins won't spend more than $1 million on any international signees and most likely everyone on this list will get at least that much.

If your refering to Jesse Sanchez top 30 list at MLB.com, my comment came out before that list came out. That being said, the other International Prospect Guru, Ben Badler (how sad is it there really is only two guys?!) seems less convinced the Twins are the front runners. In his last insider article, he talks a lot about international pitching. Though he has the Twins as one of 3 teams in on Yona, he has the Red Sox breaking their cap and very much in on the top pitchers in this draft. Like Nicksaviking mentioned, The Twins don't over pay for prospects, the Reds Sox will, so if the Red Sox want Yona to go with the other two top 20 pitchers all they have to do is out bid the Twins over their limit. The Twins might be the favorites, but I don't get a feeling a deal is already in places like the Rays and Rondon or The Brewers and Lara.

Mike Berardino's Article/Interview with Terry Ryan about the International signing period which starts Wednesday. Ryan doesn't give out too many new details but here a few interesting tidbits:

- Ryan is skeptical about reports of the Yankees/other teams blowing past their cap space on players this years.

- The Twins won't be trading away cap space. They have players they like.

- Ynoa had a bad outing (I'm not sure if that increases or decrease the odds of the Twins signing him).

Guess TR was wrong about the Yankees blowing by their $2.1931MM allocation. Here's what they've spent so far:

 

Nelson Gomez, IF $2.25MM (#2 Prospect)

Wilkerman Garcia, SS $1.35MM (#14 Prospect)

Dermis Garcia, SS $3.2MM (#1 Prospect)

Miguel Flames, C $1MM (#25 Prospect)

Juan De Leon, OF $??? (#5 Prospect)

Hyo-Jun Park, SS $1.1MM (#13 Prospect)

Jonathan Amundary, OF $1.5MM (#7 Prospect)

Antonio Arias, OF $.8MM (#8 Prospect)

 

That's 8 of the top 25 prospects (5 of the top 10) at over $11MM so far. Clearly the penalties are not nearly enough. The Yankees are expected to spend over $30MM with the 100% overage tax. It makes me sick. Maybe if the overage tax was 10,000% it would be fairer.

Wolfson's latest tweet. I've tweeted him asking for names and amounts with no response so far. If a few others sent it out, we could get it updated here.

 

#MNTwins agreed w/ another pitcher today. Total through 36 hours of int'l FA: 7 pitchers, 2 OFs, 1 IF, 1 catcher. Close on a few more.
