Trevor Plouffe to the DL

Just saw this too but missed your thread so I posted the tweet in the other thread.

11 errors/33 games. Let's hope it was just a temper tantrum at being sent down to ROC.

The Twins are "dinged" with the loss of Plouffe (I'm guessing he's out until the All-Star game). They are "banged up" if Nuñez is out more than a day or two. They are "crippled" if Dozier can't play as soon as Monday. Let's see what the lineup looks like today.

Update and background on the situation from Phil Miller's blog:

Trevor Plouffe has been sent home to Minneapolis, suffering from the flu. He's also been placed on the disabled list with inflammation between the ninth rib and costal cartilage on his left side, an injury that was aggravated by diving for a ground ball on Saturday.

And this not-too-encouraging bit of news on "Pedro's Progress":

Plouffe, the Twins' RBI leader this season with 38, has been replaced, at least temporarily, by shortstop Pedro Florimon, giving the Twins enough infielders to get through today's series finale at Comerica Park.

Florimon, optioned to Class AAA Rochester on May 8, was batting .230 with the Red Wings, and had committed 11 errors at shortstop. He has one hit in his last 25 major-league at-bats.

Well, Dozier is in the starting line-up today batting 3rd behind Santana and Mauer.

Let's hope he can stay in the line-up and on the field.

Playing 2nd and batting 3rd? Gardy does the impossible.

It's a "I'm going to criticize the Twins player development even though it's unrelated" comment

I found it to be more of a humorous jab than a criticism. Why so serious?

*shrug*

Romero instead of Florimon instead? Why not? 40-man still has moveable parts.

Are we trying to field the worst defensive 3rd baseman to go with the worst defensive corner outfielders in baseball? I haven't heard anything good about Romero's defense, this team has a horrible defense already.

Currently, I see the called up player as a bench player. Why use Romero over Florimon to sit on the bench?

Well, they could have put Pelf on the 60 day, added Romero, and had him play 3b. While that'd be a dropoff defensively from having Plouffe, I'm not sure it's worse than moving Escobar to 3rd, Santana to short, and having Fuld play center. At least if you just sub in Romero for Plouffe you don't lose quite so much offensively, and you're only subbing in at one position.

Now you've got a CFer that isn't much if any better than Santana, and a worse defensive SS. Plus you've taken a bat out of the lineup, and what good does Florimon do as a bench player?

Yeah, Florimon as a bench player provides nothing anyway.

Exactly right, Chief. A team that's saying "why not?" and going for it can't worry about roster issues with Romero down the road. What we know for sure is that:

Plouffe is gone for 15 days (I would bet that it will be more than that),

and that Fuld is best-utilized as a 4th OFer,

and that the only position Florimon has ever played is SS,

and that Florimon's only viable asset, defense, is a serious question mark based on his play in AAA,

and that Nunez is day-to-day,

and that Santana is still shaky at SS,

and that Dozier is battling a bad back-

Escobar is spread too thin covering all of that responsibility in the utility role. He's doing fine at SS for now. I hope the Twins come to the realization that they're going to need another bat.

And Escobar has shown great improvement hitting and fielding given the consistency of one position, so you may jeopardize the long term gains at a position of extended weakness for a short term issue. He's played well at SS, leave him there. Nunez has played well in a reserve capacity (and is day to day) bring in someone who is a full time third basemen, preferably with options.
