Not sure what he's expecting, other clubs surely are able to see he has issues that are not compatible to playing on a MLB roster. Seems like most vets recently have swallowed their pride and accepted the AAA reassignment. Kubel does not appear to be willing to do the same for the Twins.

 

Perhaps this refusal also sheds some light on what his attitude would have been had he been sent to Rochester to start the season as would have been the Twins perogative. It was reported that he was all but promised a 25-man spot which seemed odd considering his recent track record and his poor spring training performance.

He may want to consider his options - taking the assignment would have closed off other possibilities. I would expect he would wait to see if other options emerge. Not sure the Twins would readily accept him back if nothing panned out.

I don't see this as an attitude thing, I see this as a "he realizes this is prob the end of the road" type thing.

Accepting the assignment now would have done nothing for him. Since he already made the major league roster this year, he's guaranteed his full salary either way. He would just have been bound to stay in Rochester for the rest of the year or retire, right? He could probably always catch on with some AAA team under those terms, if he wanted to, maybe one with a preferable geographic location, or a clearer path back to MLB.

A good month or two there might have earned him a cash considerations trade to another organization looking to capture some pinch hitting lightning in a bottle, but it seems likely that he's ready to be done.

 

He's a small town kid from the middle of nowhere (and 20 miles from the geographic center of the U.S) who made a fortune playing baseball after a devastating injury, and he's got most of the rest of his adult life to do pretty much whatever he wants. I'd say he's done awfully well for himself, and pretty well for the Twins too.

Right now, it doesn't matter where he plays. A team has to play a pro-rated amount of his contract only if he makes the majors. If he wants to play, Rochester would be just as good as the Long Island ducks, unless he can sign on with someone that might give him a callup at season's end.

 

He has to thank the Twins for putting him on the field as well as in the lineup.

 

He might be able to pull off a year in Asia if he wants to. But maybe should set his sights now on coaching instead.

 

I always wondered what he would've been like if he didn't blow out both knees. He supposedly ahd great instincts on the bases.

Belle fourche represent!!! I have a dozen relatives who live there....however, kubel was only born there apparently and grew up in Cali.

 

It's too bad if this is the end for him. Hell of a player to watch though and made a nice career for himself
