How many in management do not have a 1) rudimentary understanding of mathematics. They all have college degrees. Ryan mat be the only one that played baseball.

That there are teams out there that snap up the Mastroianis, Presleys and even Wilsons of the worlds should be a basic clue that there are not many out there.

2) Another pretty basic concept is not everything you try works.

1) You're misstating what I said, I said "college mathematics", most college graduates can get a college degree with little or no math beyond a rehash of high school concepts ("rudimentary" indeed) and an introductory stats course.

2) Which is why you have to have a viable Plan A, C & D.....and you look for doing some of your snapping up in the offseason when there are many more options....and then you're not blindly and stubbornly only going with one of the most misguided "Plan B's" (Bartlett) in MLB history.

.211 ba,.287 OBP and the numbers are going down. I would think the optimism for a return of the old Sizemore will fade as the OPS goes below .600. The possibility of a DFA is pretty good

In the race to the bottom, it looks like the Twins FO has the much higher pain threshold:

Sizemore May BA .214 OPS: 570

Hicks May BA .184 OPS: .551

Kubel May BA .197 OPS: .507

Colabello May BA .125 OPS: .365

I clicked "like" on AM's post above, but I do have a nit to pick. Going into the season, Hicks had 124 days of service in MLB. In order for the Twins to bank another year of service time, Hicks would have had to have been in the minors for four months. It is possible that Hicks could qualify for Super 2 arbitration after next season and a demotion would probably end that scenario.

I was talking about 2013 only. At this point, I would be very happy if we have to worry much about Hicks' service time in the future!

Anyway, what happens when he runs out of rope on his rehab and he's still sitting at 88?

i suppose no one would claim him if they DFA him. So they send him out and hope he eventually gets his velo back. If not, oh well.

If they DFA'd him, would he accept an assignment to the minors?

I hope we give consideration to signing Kendrys Morales. The offense is starting to show its colors and Kubel, Parmalee, and Colabello are at the top of list of those who are struggling.

Even if he were Super 2, what would he earn on arbitration if he continues this performance? 800K instead of the 500K minimum?

If he doesn't accept assignment, do they still have to pay him? I think he becomes a free agent, which would be a gift.

Once a player has 5 years of service time they cannot be demoted to the minors without consent. If they don't consent, the team either needs to keep them on the active roster, or release them and continue paying them (minus the difference in any new contract from another team).

So this is why it is not a "no-brainer" to sign guys "because you can always trade them." I will keep the identity of said quotester a secret, but, you know who you are.

Mauer, Suzuki, Pinto, Willingham, Arcia, Kubel, Parmelee

Two guys need to sit. Pinto and Arcia need to play. Arcia nearly every day. Pinto at least 2 starts in 3.

Kubel is a no brainer to me, Suzuki sits when Pinto is catching because he has absolutely no other value. On the days Suzuki catches DH Pinto, if Hammer has been the DH then sit him, if he has been in LF let Arcia play there instead of being the DH. Outfield defense is apparently of no concern to the Twins anyway.

1. What does calculus have to do with baseball? Please explain because I would really love to know.

The field of statistics is a completely different entity that mathematics. Any of the baseball writers spinning ideas have only used basic concepts of statistics. What they do use is a capacity to think a little bit about a problem .

2. What other options? Bonifacio's .215 for the month of May? Sizemore is hitting that for the season. Overpay for Granderson to get similar production? Nyler Morgan is a defensive liability. There were not a whole lot of options much different than what they were doing. Fuld played about as well here as anyone picked up has done. Like Bonifacio, he would have regressed back to his mean.
