Article: Logan Darnell to join Twins on Friday

Recommended Posts

But then, what to do with Pelfrey? I guess you can get pretty esoteric about your DL excuses, but I'm not sure how well "missing 2 MPH off his heater" would fly with the league and/or player. That happens to plenty of otherwise healthy pitchers all the time (they usually aren't under brand-new, multi-year contracts though, and/or they were coming from a better starting point than Pelfrey).

That's why I thought, swap Pelfrey and Deduno, ideally before yesterday's games. Let Pelf figure things out in the pen as a mop-up man, then DL/demote/release from there (or keep him in the pen or promote him back to the rotation if things go well).

DFA him. Just move on with life, and admit you are rebuilding, and give the young guys a chance. Admitting this mistake would slightly increase my confidence in this FO.

I know it's easy for me to say but I wouldn't worry to much about Pelfrey at this point. I think there are lots of better options who are all part of the longer term plan. I don't think Pelfrey will ever help the Twins. I say do whatever you've got to do with him to make room for these other guys. Then again, I'm not the one writing his checks.

In fairness, Herrmann is the 25th man and plays corner OF more than catches and Pinto is the everyday DH.

Yes, but also in fairness, Pinto is a catcher, and Herrmann is a catcher who can play OF and who is on the roster so Pinto, a catcher, can DH without Mr. Gardenhire collapsing into a terrified, sobbing heap in the dugout at the prospect of "losing the DH", as if one or two lost AB's mean more than going long chunks of the season with what amounts to a 24 man roster.

And it also allows him to play Herrmann, who is maybe a marginal hitter for a backup catcher, occasionally as a starting corner outfielder. The system works.

I didn't see this coming. I expected Johnson to stay in Minnesota or Deduno to take Pelfrey's role or a reliever to come up from Rochester. I didn't expect them to bring up Darnell.

I don't understand the reluctance of Twins management to stretch out Deduno. He is easily the best pitcher on this staff. If Nolasco, Pelfrey and Correia continue to stink it up, I would not be surprised if Pelfrey gets optioned to AAA and Correia DFA'd.

Logan is getting a start. Are Meyer and May next? Those two would be the next logical options?

LoDarn? Darnie? Darnsie?

At any rate, if he's good enough for Batavia Downs Casino to name him Player of the Week, he's good enough to take the ball and have a go.

Eh, I think Hughes is the best pitcher on this staff. I thought that the moment he was signed. He's had some rough innings but overall, he's been pretty good if you look past that ERA.

Though Deduno is no lower than the third best starter on the team *if* (and it's a big if) he can stay healthy.

Well, as I've expressed before, it would be nice to see them get out in front of something for a change. Dump a guy early rather than late.

But, at the same time, we're not brimming with perfect alternatives either. Dumping Marquis early in 2012 did us no favors, and although we've got more options now, there's no reason we can't stash Pelf in the bullpen for a while, if not the DL or AAA if he accepts an assignment.

His salary is guaranteed; the 40-man spot is negligible; given a big bullpen, the 25-man isn't too crowded either. And while we're hopefully improved, it's probably not going to be critical to squeeze every last possible win out of our 2014 season. It's just the 5-man MLB rotation where he's really not welcome at the moment; we don't want to be giving away too many wins that easily!

Same here, although it wouldn't have surprised me if Nolasco had more success initially, an opinion that's difficult to admit at this point. Hughesie's K rate will probably decline some, but so will the ERA if he pitches anything like he has been so far.

I was under impression that the corresponding news was Hicks going on the 7-day DL, but perhaps I am wrong. These roster moves are fun to watch. You never know what's going to happen next. Let's get a 10-man bullpen!!!

I think we need to make a list of Gardyisms and their true meanings. For example:

His stuff is electric = He has no idea where it's going and neither do I.

The ball is coming out of his hand really well = It looks like a beach ball to the hitter.

He's a good clubhouse guy = He buys me dinner after the games when I play him.

Official active roster has been updated here:

http://www.mlb.com/team/roster_active.jsp?c_id=min

Pretty surreal to see 14 pitchers, 3 catchers, 6 infielders, and only 2 (!) outfielders listed (even if one of those 3 catchers is being deployed as a sub-replacement-level corner outfielder).

Surreal is not the word I would've chosen.

I live in Kentucky and I realize I really need to start going to some University of Kentucky baseball games. It seems like half the Twins minor organization has played there at some point.

On another point, really excited to see Darnell get a shot of the Big club! Hopefully he sticks!

In fairness, I think the 14 pitchers is the more egregious part. How many teams have had 14 pitchers on their 25 man roster at any given time?

Especially when your team just had 3 consecutive days off?

I don't think there is another manager in the league who could have Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday off, yet manage to completely wipe out his 8 relief pitchers by Thursday.

Yep. And Hughes will remain #! until Meyer can get himself called up and then established. And Deduno is highly unlikely to ever stay healthy, which makes him difficult, or even a waste the time to rank.

Yes. And the "terrific corner OF! label" for Hermann didn't even make it to the freshness expiration date. It's hard to see how someone who pieced this together was once Manager of the Year. I guess they punted on makng a decision on Pelfrey, then (this was supposed to be Decision Day)? Wouldn't the logical move have been to DL Pelfrey and replace him with Darnell, since even if you wanted Pelfrey to ptich, he's unavailable until Tuesday at the earliest? Down to just two potential positional moves available for the next few days.....preposterous.

Looks like maybe Darnell is the new Deduno until something is decided on what to do with Pelfrey??
